FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HOLLYWOOD RECORDS TO RELEASE SOUNDTRACK FROM

M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN’S "THE VILLAGE,"

FEATURING JAMES NEWTON-HOWARD SCORE

August, 2, 2004- New York, NY) The summer of 2004 is about to get a whole lot scarier.

M. Night Shyamalan, director of THE SIXTH SENSE and SIGNS, returns to the big screen with his most frightening masterwork yet, THE VILLAGE. Capturing all of the film’s disquieting terror is a score by composer James Newton Howard, soon to be a soundtrack CD from Hollywood Records. The CD arrives in stores July 26, while the film premieres in theaters nationwide July 30.

For THE VILLAGE James Newton Howard reteams with writer/director Shyamalan after scoring his previous hits THE SIXTH SENSE, UNBREAKABLE, and SIGNS. In this edgy atmospheric score, Howard drew on the talents of renowned classical violinist Hillary Hahn, who performs throughout.

James Newton Howard is one of Hollywood's most prolific composers, with more than 85 films to his credit. He has received five Academy Award nominations, two Golden Globe nominations and a Grammy nomination. His credits include such films as THE FUGITIVE, PRETTY WOMAN, THE PRINCE OF TIDES, GRAND CANYON, GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, DEVIL’S ADVOCATE and PETER PAN to name a few.

Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Adrien Brody, Sigourney Weaver and William Hurt, THE VILLAGE tells the tale of an isolated village confronting the astonishing truth just outside its borders. At first the village appears picture perfect, but the close-knit community lives with the knowledge that evil creatures reside in the surrounding woods. The foreboding force is so unnerving; no one dares venture beyond the borders of the village. But when the headstrong Lucius Hunt (Phoenix) plans to step into the unknown, he threatens to forever change the future of the village.

M. Night Shyamalan's Blinding Edge Pictures' and Scott Rudin Productions present THE VILLAGE for Touchstone Pictures, directed and written by M. Night Shyamalan. Associate producer is Jose Rodriguez. Buena Vista Pictures distributes.

Was it really necessary to bump an 11 year-old PR post???

I was actually just thinking about JNH's The Village yesterday and wondering when someone is going to put it back in print. I'd like to buy an unused copy for less than $45.

I think he has maybe bought his first scanner, and wants to show off his scanning skills everywhere.

It's like, so 20 years ago.

Photoshop skills will be next up...

Well, Thor wouldn't have liked a new topic being started.

There's plenty of new ones still available at the normal price:

That's right, but I think an even greater idea for Zardoz is to post a new thread called "Back cover scans" or some such thing where he can post all these things.

NYET! It is the will of Zardoz. The scan is good! (although not great, I mean c'mon...)

Wow!
Is it just me, or are the Thread Police really out in force and tightening their borders these days??

And here's what I said about it, on one of the many other threads about this film/score...

There have been quite a number of threads about this film in the past, so I will just pretty much cut and paste what I said in an earlier thread, which still holds up today...

When I first saw The Village in a cinema, I was disappointed with it (although I must say the acting, lensing, design and music are all first-rate).
However, I found myself thinking about the film days and weeks later (how often does that happen with films these days?)
By the time the DVD was released I couldn't wait to revisit the film and I have grown to appreciate it a whole lot more and still do.
It's a real slow-burner and is a brave attempt to try something different (even if the twist is a bit lame - I think once you get over it the film stands up as a fine piece of filmmaking) and JNH is always on hand to elevate the proceedings ten fold.
By the way The Main Title/Burial Scene and the score under the song Bryce Howard sings to her upset sister are absolutely terrific but not on the CD, which is not good.

Rather than create a new thread, I reviewed the many former threads on "The Village" and thought this was appropriate to update because it is about the soundtrack album and not about pre-film speculations or post-film opinions.

The film's underwhelming, but this is a gorgeous score and it could definitely do with an expansion. For whatever reason, I always though this would be one that LLL would do one day... whaddya think, MV?

These are not my scans; I found these images in an online blog by a longtime collector (a collector who is not me, by the way):

https://fmarchives.wordpress.com/about/

The scans are not to show off anything but the contents listed on the back of the albums which I consider to be favorite soundtracks.

Current sites such as Intrada may offer images of the reverse of the CD, but many of these older albums and sites did not have their images.

(The emphasis is not so much the scans but to bring attention to forgotten albums deserving re-evaluations)

A new thread containing scans of back covers makes organizational sense (if one is an Information Technology type of person), but this would not serve my intention that well.

A sequence of JPEGs or GIFs or such image file formats would not reflect my favorite albums.

I've been searching past threads on my favorite albums and updating them with an image link so as to reignite interest in those albums.
(I also do this when Intrada announces a deletion of one of their vintage scores that will not be remaining in their catalog.)

Fair enough, but surely you can see how pushing to the top of the board a PR post for an 11 year-old film with only one reply will mislead many to believe this long out-of-print and highly-sought album has just been reissued or expanded...when in fact said thread only contains a scan of the back cover and a thumb's up. Not the first time this has happened on this board, but the first time for a score I'm very interested in.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm wary of moderately-priced "new" copies of long-out-of-print albums sold by private vendors on Amazon. I've been burned in the past. Oftentimes these turn out to be counterfeits.

That Amazon UK link is to the official score sold by Amazon itself. It was not a link to any marketplace sellers.

Maybe it is out of print in your country, but not here. That is the same official release that I purchased a few years ago.

Oh. Thanks for that clarification. I didn't think The Village was still in print anywhere and just assumed it was the marketplace. I guess this thread has helped me out after all, hah.
