The film bombed miserably (deservedly so...I only have it on DVD because I'm a Spielberg nut), and the music by Williams ain't all that great either. Sure, the march is catchy, but it is repeated all too many times, and the soundscape is too dense and bombastic (enough with the canons already!). There's a bigband swing tune midway to leviate some of the pressure, but the album could not have been one minute longer than the 30-something minutes it is, IMO. If I REALLY want to hear more of the score, I'll switch on the isolated score track on the DVD, but I really won't. Decent, but not more.

Thor, buddy. When did you last update you Celuloid Tunes website Composer links page ?. I know its not subject related, but what the hell. There doesn't seem to be any "comprehensive" page of such links anywhere else. Or is this another case of less is more ?.

What I love about this particular score is that Williams uses a military march, which are by nature very precise, and then goes a bit loopy with it. It's precise and militaristic one moment, but then breaks free, only to barely contain itself again with the very rhythmic drum corps stuff. The cannons, an obvious reference to the 1812 Overture, just add to the fun. And the score is teeming with rowdy and mock-romantic themes. The big band number is clearly a riff on "Sing Sing Sing" (though Williams isn't trying to hide that influence, as he calls his "Swing Swing Swing"), and it's fun, too. This is one of the rare comedy scores that works by tipping its hand and freely going for comedy. I just wish I found the film amusing.

I found it a great surprise... a VERY funny movie (in its original non-extended version) and the music was just GREAT. Williams' capturing of the 40s style was on the money!

I love the score and that march is one of Williams best, IMHO of course. sd Agreed. Now take your wife out to see Clark's BLACK CHRISTMAS.

I'm sure I'm going to come off as incredibly naive here but... what?! I would blush if I had to explain it to you. Just figure you are too young to know...

I don't think the album assembly does the score justice. There are some substantial cues missing from the album that don't rely on the march. The score would probably benefit from a slight expansion (or restructuring, perhaps) to add a bit of variety. The score, and film in its original version, are fine as they stand. A greatly fun film.
