I must admit that I've never really used online radio very much (in fact, I don't even listen to regular radio very much). Not even all the soundtrack shows that guys like Erik Woods churn out on a regular basis. I've preferred regular CD's when I'm online.

But lately, I've been digging into various iTunes radio stations, especially in the "electronica" category (house and progressive dance, in particular).

What about you? Are you a user of online radio? If so, what stations are you tuning in to?

NP: 1FM Club (one of my favourite iTunes electronica stations)

I don't listen to online radio, but I'm curious to know what 'progressive dance' is. I get this image of bearded middle-agers grooving to Yes.

He, he...no, it has nothing to do with prog-rock per se. It's more like techno music without those stupid trance string synths and wailing female vocal. More beat-based, with some funky undercurrents and a "progressive" (i.e. experimental) sound. Closer to house.

On a side note Thor, I was very much into house/dance/rave music the first half of the 90s. The Quart Festival had some great artists at that time that I got to see - 808 State, Utah Saints, The Orb, Underworld, Dread Zone and so on. I still regret that I didn't catch Orbital in a reportedly classic performance here in 1994. In the summer of 1993 I visited Summer Hypnosis in Oslo, a terrific rave.

I have never been into drugs - thank God, it was the music and the shows that was the great thing for me and my friends.

You are some years younger than me, but have you ever been a part of the house community, or do you strictly use it as music to listen to in your own home?

I was never an avid raver, but I did try it quite a few times (I was at Hyperstate 2000 here in Oslo, for example, which I believe was the last of its kind). I tried XTC once, but never again. It was fun for a night, but I was sick for a week.

Today, I only listen to it in my home (or when I travel long-distance). Did you know that the one and only Paul Oakenfold was here in Oslo in 1997, FirstBreath? He was at the Cosmopolitan Club just a block away from where I live (I believe it was some sort of vorspiel to the Quart festival in Kristiansand). I have the 2CD set, and enjoy it quite a bit, except for the low-tech trance bit at the end.

I didn't know of Oakenfold being in Oslo, but then I even missed out on the Jarre concerts in Oslo the same year! I just recently found out that JMJ played twice there in 1997...

I never listened to radio for music. Today I only listen news and politics on the radio and often do so via an mp3 stream because my terrestrial/satellite reception often gets interrupted.

Here in the UK, I listen online to the BBC's Radio 7.
This has all the classic BBC shows from the 50's , right up to the present day. Plus, you can listen again to any recent programmes you may have missed.

www.BBC.co.uk has ALL the other BBC radio stations, as well as some TV shows available.
It's indispensible !

I was actually answering the original question: I do not use online radio.

Re: the original question: no, but mainly just because I'm on a puny dialup connection (still!), and it doesn't serve any kind of streaming media well. I fully expect to once I have broadband.

Lately, I've been playing a lot of 80's radio stations, since that is period I connect with nostalgically. Just now, for example, there was the super-funky "Don't Go" by Alison Moyet's Yazoo (and written by the ever-reliable Vince Clark). I wish there were a station dedicated ENTIRELY to 80's synth pop! smile

Call me slow, but I just NOW discovered that there is ONE single film music radio station on iTunes, and that is streamingsoundtracks.com under the "eclectic" category. Unfortunately, it's only in 64 kbps, which isn't all that good. It usually has to be minimun 128 kbps for me to bother. But since it's film music, and since it's the only one about it, I'll give it a chance.

Aargh...now thereĀ“s just a 32 kps radio station at iTunes that feature soundtracks - called A Fistful of Soundtracks or some such thing. Does anyone know of any other iTunes-compatible film music radios out there?
