I rented the first of 4 discs of TNT's 'Into The West' last weekend and knew that I couldn't wait for the second disc to arrive from Netflix and went out to purchase the dvd set. I'm loving it. But the one element from this massive mini-series that I am finding most memorable seems to be the wonderful score composed by Geoff Zanelli. Doing a background check on him I find he's done (always) 'additional music by' in end credits to numerous other films, this being I think his first solo film...and then went on to WIN the Emmy Award this past August for this score. Any chances of it's coming out on disc? Intrada?

For some reason (which to be very honest no one can really figure it out) the production company doesn't want a CD released of his scores to this mini-series.

No one will say WHY, but it's just a dead issue.

I know, I wanted to put it out and hit a brick wall (as did the composer).

What's the music like? I know he's from the Media Ventures school but can you hear the instruments and is there separation between the sounds? Is it 'traditional' western like Elmer or Bruce, or offbeat, guitar-inflected Morricone-esque stuff. Is it unique and original or 'generic' sounding?
Just curious?

It's off-beat in the Basil Poledouris "Lonesome Dove" mode (LD's director Simon Wincer directed an episode) but with far more native vocalizations imbedded in the tracks.

What it reminds me of (but in flavor than in melody) is Williams' themes for "Far and Away."
Just finished the miniseries, in fact.

You won't have much longer to wait to find out - BBC2's (finally) airing it next month.

Brings to mind "The Last Samurai" a bit (Zanelli worked on that one as well)

I hope all of you in The UK who tune in and watch enjoy it as much as I have. It's an enormous mini-series in scope and it's retelling of events. At the end of each episode as the credits roll, it says all the characters are based on real people but some situations may have been created. It's still, for me anyway, enthralling television! I think you'll know if you're hooked on it within about 20 minutes or so; I found the first 4 hours to be my favorites, personally.
For those of you on this messageboard who haven't seen this miniseries, LISTEN to the score by Mr. Geoff Zanelli and take notice. Everyone here will write about Horner, Williams, Goldsmith or Morricone - here's an opportunity for a newcomer who may also in future be written about with as much enthusiasm .

When I'd read that LaLa Land is releasing the score to this massive tv miniseries, it was like a minor miracle for me. I loved the series and it's music, and noted it way back several years ago in this old thread. This thread was under my old screen name, but the feelings still remain the same. I'm eager to hear this music again, separate from the mini-series. It deserved to be released; magnificent score! Any timeline as to when it's due?

I saw a few threads about this score but picked this one to add my 2 cents to. I received the La-La Land release recently from a dear friend and have listened to it a few times. My goodness, how lovely it is. Disc 1, track 13 - "Jacob and Thunder Heart Woman" is just gorgeous. I actually love the entire score. I also want to add that I think the artwork and inserts are so well done. So happy that a dear friend thought of me (and she is not even a movie music lover lol)
