SABRINA is In my collection but rarely played. To be honest, I've never played the whole thing through. I finally played it tonight and a lot of it is quite nice. That "Kinder Gentler" Williams with a nice Piano "leaves blowing in the wind" feel to it. Reminds me a little of some of his ALWAYS Score which is excellent.
What are your thoughts on these John Williams Scores? Please share.
John Williams is justly famous for his action scoring, but people tend to forget that he is equally adept in other genres. I'm a huge fan of his gentler scores, such as Sabrina, Stepmom and The Terminal, and I hope he writes more of them in the future.
What I like about the Always CD is that songs and score are not mixed. From Williams' compositions, I prefer the emotional stuff like "Among the Clouds", "Saying Goodbye", and "Dorinda Solo Flight". The very introspective, sparse stuff never connected with me, but I might give it a spin sometime to see how I feel about it today. It's been a while since a played this one through. When I bought the CD a long time ago, "Follow me" was a favourite, but didn't have as much stamina emotionally speaking, as the other tracks mentioned above. I've heard Sabrina only in the film and didn't find too much in it that made me run out and buy it.
Damn, the previous threads on these scores cannot be retrieved.
Oh well...I like two tracks on ALWAYS - "Follow Me" and "Dorinda Solo Flight". I don't really care for the non-descript textural stuff. Seems to wander aimlessly and really isn't very interesting. One of my least-played soundtracks.
SABRINA is a casual listening experience for heavy Sundays and hang-overs. Nice, but somewhat too sugary. Interesting to note that the song "Moonlight" is pretty much the same melody as "Make Me Rainbows" from FITZWILLY.
Personally, I have never much liked the CD (or the film itself, for that matter) of ALWAYS.
SABRINA is nice, though, that beautiful piano theme I can listen to many times over. Then there is that lovely song - sung by Michael Dees - a gorgeous Williams melody and VERY well-performed by the vocalist. How can I remember? Because it's so good, that's why!
