I remember seeing the video of this back in L.A. and enjoyed the score.

Some parts, if I remember correctly, seemed a strange yet effective mix of LOGAN'S RUN and THE OTHER with some definate LR electronics going on.

Love the music scored for the car speeding near the end of the film.

What ever happend to Michael Sarrazin? Margot Kidder of course did SUPERMAN.

Also, loved the line delivered by the old man about the guy getting his nuts cut clean off or something to that effect. Did I really hear that? Perhaps the victim had a little too much Pride for his Peter?

Any chance of a release for this one?

Please share your thoughts on film and score.

Cool. Love to hear your reviews. Just to see Steiger's naked ass in IM is worth a few chuckles to be sure. I love Goldsmith's score to this film.

Enjoy!

I remember seeing this film at the theatre back in 1975 - I did end up getting a used VHS copy of the film a few years ago - I always found the film and score quite fascinating - pretty creepy at the end when Kidder kills Peter Proud - I will have to pull the tape out and watch it again, even though it's of poor quality.

I wonder if this score will ever see a release - as I recall, I don't think the film is from a major studio...:-)

Jerry Goldsmith's score:

Well, of course I have to add my 2 cents worth to this wonderful thread topic! wink

I asked Lukas awhile back what the status of this Goldsmith title was and he said that no tapes had turned up for this one....that was some time ago, so I for one am hoping pristine stereo masters have since been discovered and Jeff Bond is right now putting the finishing touches on his extensive liner notes. I can dream can't I?

For those that have not seen this very hard to find thriller you're missing out on one of the greatest examples of film scoring prestidigitation that there is. A great story is given a very average interpretation but saved miraculously by Goldsmith's haunting score. I hope one day this title is released on DVD (or better yet HD-DVD) and everyone can experience Jerry's mystical feat of musically pulling a film's very soul out of mid air.

In an identical thread on Intrada's board, Doug Fake has this to say about the state of this score:

"true master elements for the majority of this score remain missing... There were separate orchestral sessions, piano sessions and electronic sessions. Where everything ended up is a mystery. We've found a small part of them but that's it so far."

I saw the movie in the summer of 1975 as a late teen, and Post Exorcist era found this intriguing premise of a movie- well, flat. I do like the score, though; echos of early TZ Goldsmith, and quite hypnotically repetitive. I have one of those "private' recordings, and it just may be all we ever see.

This is one of my favorite Goldsmith scores mainly for it's beautiful & haunting melody.

Too bad that the elements aren't available for a release.

This is one of those "bottle caps" I'd love to have legitimately.

I managed to watch illustrated man last night, peter proud will have to wait till this evening.

Regarding Illustrated Man, it's a wierd movie.

I liked the dialogue between the young guy and Carl, the illustrated hobo he meets. Once Carl (Steiger) starts to show the tales behind his tattoos you basically get little shortfilms within the movie. The one with the lions in Africa I found to be the best but the other stories were pretty bland and too serious.

Goldsmith's music is a hit 'n miss throughout the movie, the first story with the lions was scored in his 'Logan's Run' experimental style and it did not fit the futuristic feel (same can be said of the set design). Bubbling synth effects, stabbing strings, ... kind a messy. The best music comes from the main story and the scenes involving the illustrated man.

This movie has some good ideas but ultimately failed to make anything good out of them. I know this movie is dated, but i do believe it to be flawed for its time. I felt like I watched 3 episodes of the Twilight Zone strung together by a better story that should have been the main focus of the movie.

For Peter Proud i've got low expectations, so I hope those are at least met smile

Ok, saw Reincarnation of Peter Proud last night and was surprised at how good this movie is!

The movie shows college professor Peter Proud, played by Michael Sarrazin, having what he believes to be nightmares at first. Only they aren't, as the time, the places and people featured in them are unfamiliar to him. He wakes up screaming and learns from his girlfriend that he has quite some monologues during his sleep.

After a visit to the sleep clinic he establishes that his dreams are more likely to be visions or memories of a past life experience. He heads off, in search for the places and people he saw in them and to learn more about the person he inherited them from.

This thriller/drama was quite entertaining and had a very quick pace about it. The montages during the dreams and the flashbacks work and like Peter, I felt the same deja vu of the dreams.

The subject of reincarnation is intelligently adressed here, I liked the subplot with Sam, the doctor and friend of Peter who'd like to show the world the proof of reincarnation. But the best moments are when Peter is confronted with the relatives and environment of his past life experience.

I also like the way you don't really know how far the reincarnation has taken place; is Peter acting a certain way because he inherited the body language or is he simply influenced by his former life memories? This is played out very subtle and almost in a selfish way by the Peter Proud character but you can't blaim him for doing so.

Jerry's music carries this movie. The main theme gets quite a workout as Peter goes in search of his former indentity and there are many moments in this movie when all you hear is Jerry's sweet music emphazing the drama or simply adding a touch of tragic romance to the scenes. For once, his synth is not out of place here (something I was distracted by in The Illustrated Man) and when that touching end title comes onto the screen, you know he's delivered quite an allround gem.

Both this movie as the score deserve a remastered presentation. If the masters for the music are indeed lost, at least try to get the movie right on dvd because it deserves the best treatment possible IMO.

P.S. Funny coincidence but this movie started the same way as Illustrated Man, that is with a naked guy swimming in a lake! roll eyes

Kino Lorber is releasing Reincarnation of Peter Proud on Blu Ray in early 2018 with a 4K remaster.

No word on extras but fingers crossed on a new commentary as Kino did for Mephisto Waltz.

This will be a gigantic improvement on the mid-1980s Vestron VHS that I saw back in the day. An odd film with a mesmerizing Goldsmith score.

Very neat...but I wish Twilight Time had done it because it doesn't look like anyone is in a hurry to give the score an official Cd release!

Hey Zoobster.....
You made me go over to youtube to listen to that 20 minutes suite... my GOD, Goldsmith has such an amazing talent for melody and musically conveying the mood of a film.
I have a question.... there's another youtube "video"(Actually, jut audio) of the score, but THIS one says it's 1 hour, 21 minutes and some change. Did Goldsmith compose THAT MUCH MUSIC for this film????

I'll add this... SOMEONE MUST be working on getting this released... they just have to be! This is an important score!

EDIT: Anyone know who performed the trumpet solos on this score? They're wonderful!!!
