I think the remake of Cape Fear is exceptional...as psychologically disturbing as it is viscerally shocking. And it looks sensational. As much as I like the original, the remake tops it.

That sounds just like Bender.

Thanks, all. The original was available first, so it's on its way from another branch. I'm 2nd in line to get the remake.

I just saw the original. A very solid thriller, gorgeously photographed.

I've all way's preferred the original Cady, Mitchum, he's more in your face, with bad intentions, plenty of attitude, & I only like Hermann's original score.

The remake is more comical, Cady is more laid back, the scenes are mostly (re-enacted) that's lacking directing skill's, script, & awful acting.

Even though De Niro is a solid actor, this genre of film, doesn't suit him well to act out his skills, & Frankenstein.

Original 62. 9/10
Remake 91. 3/10

Hey, Solium, have you gotten any closer to watching the original CAPE FEAR? I think you said you've never seen it.

"You offrin me somefin hot?"

Although de niro was very watchable as always, his performance was somewhat overacted, and the daughter ruined this for me.
After ten minutes of her... i wanted Cady to kill her and get it over with! smile

Original 8 out if ten. Mostly for the Mitchum n Peck chemistry. Remake 6 out of ten.

I am packing it in, as to watching the remake. I got 15 minutes in and found Scorcese's love of improv and visuo-dynamic reinterpretation a little annoying.

I'll wait a while and try again.

Just forget it. The movie gets worse after the first 15 minutes.

"After ten minutes of her... i wanted Cady to kill her and get it over with!"

While I hate to agree with Bill because it makes me question the validity of my VERY refined and excellent tastes, I do have to agree that the daughter drove me bonkers in the remake. I also thought Di Niro was directed to overact in places. Other parts I thought were good, but the original is the best.

I recall the daughter's hair in the original distracting me badly, in a bad way.

Scorcese's version is what's wrong with Scorcese as a filmmaker in general: style and flash over really good storytelling, i.e. he's not often as intelligent as he needs to be to achieve his ambitions as an artist. He's not bad, more often than not above average, sometimes quite good, but for me almost always there's a certain something missing with his movies.

That said, I really want to see his latest film, SILENCE, but I'm not expecting anything on the level of the best of Roman Polanski (very uneven director too) or Stanley Kubrick or Orson Welles. I don't find him in the same class as those three, though I'll bet Thor would vehemently disagree.

Hes had a couple of maybe odd, possibly poorly-chosen projects but Goodfellas and Casino were faultless and engrossing and easily 10 out of 10s.
