For, at the very least, John William's score.

It was a fun screening. I'd never seen I Wanna Hold Your Hand and it was hysterical. 1941 I've seen many times, but this was the second time in a theater and there was a lot of laughter from the crowd. It's much funnier than it's reputation would have you think. And yes, the Williams score is wonderful.

I remeber going to a screening of 1941 at the Scala Cinema in London many years ago. It was a double bill with Dr.Strangelove.

How was the print?

The film's a strangely mixed bag. I see why it is as bad as how it is, but at the same time you have to recognize the strong points of it. I don't think it's really very funny at all, but from another perspective it's hilarious - especially as seen in the context of the history of comedy & slapstick. And the direction is still classic Spielberg.

Incidentally, they aired the film here this weekend (once every fifteen years or so). It was anamorphic but 16:9 unfortunately - I had hoped for the correct format since there's no R2 DVD at all. (And the R1 is really crappy, apparently.)

Are there any plans to release this decently?

I've always enjoyed this movie, and score.smileI would love to see it on the big screen, I was only two when it came out.

Everything with Slim Pickens, Toshiro Mifune, and Christopher Lee is gold. I wish the movie had centered on the tension between them.

How was the print?

Both prints were perfect.

1941 has an HD transfer, but as you said, it's 16x9 (and the shorter theatrical version). I hope a nice HD transfer of the long version becomes available at some point.

with 16x9 you mean 1.85:1 cutting the sides of the long 2.40 scope?

Thanks for the info, Neil.
I must admit I didn't even know there was a longer version. What's the story behind it?

Can you believe this Williams score has yet to get a proper release? After finally getting Doom this might be the biggest gap in Williams soundtrack canon...

What is improper about the existing release? You mean it's not long enough? II have to say, it's an extremely satisfying listen. I don't yearn for more.

The laser disc and DVD both have an isolated score track, too.

I think the 1941 album is great. And thankfully, unlike most of his 80's albums, still in print, on Varese.

Me neither. In fact, some of the music on this album is so bombastic and busy that 30-40 minutes is more than enough.

I like bombast.

I've gone the other way in my older years (wink), i.e. a preference for calmer material.
