I haven't got the Astral Syphony version alas, but as a slight aside, I think it's high time all the Star Trek soundtracks were due a re-master, and re-release, not to mention needing expanded versions of all the scores.
Agreed on all of the above!
Just listened to TWOK yesterday and it sounded very muddied and harsh.

Yes, the GNP disc sounds rather terrible, although I must admit that it doesn't sound terribly different from the LP I have, although that is admittedly a bit worn.
The versions of the tracks on The Astral Symphony are much superior and prove that this album could sound much, much better.
I certainly hope that we may see expanded and/or complete versions of the Star Trek scores soon.

Was that an attempt to remix it for home listening? It would have been better off being left as originally recorded, if that's what the Astral Symphony release represents.
I remember this topic coming up before. And you're right, there's a notable difference.
The GNP Crescendo (CD, and cassette tape) releases of Horner's "Star Trek 2" and "Star Trek 3" were newly mixed, most significantly boasting the deployment of "BASE" technology ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedini_Audio_Spectral_Enhancer ), specifically for those GNP Crescendo releases. However, when Paramount (under the supervision of Cliff Eidelman, fresh off his "Star Trek VI" score) was compiling "The Astral Symphony", they used their own source masters to work with. And this makes sense - why would they go and requisition GNP Crescendo's, right? Those were licensed out, mixed and done specifically for those particular releases.
Whether "The Astral Symphony" represents the exact same masters used for the old Atlantic (for "Trek 2") and Capitol (for "Trek 3") vinyl and cassette tape releases at the time of the original film releases, or they did any significant remixing specifically for "The Astral Symphony", I'm not sure - never compared those releases side-by-side. 
I tend to agree both "Trek 2" and "Trek 3" could use an expansion and new mixes. I've seen some threads here that list in-film cues not represent on the soundtrack recordings and it'd be nice to have some of that stuff. I really like the Uhura's "surrender" hail to Khan cue near the end of "Trek 2".

While there are indeed some very nice unreleased cues from Wrath of Khan (such as the Spacedock and Genesis Cave sequences), I think The Search for Spock would benefit more as a listening experience from an expansion.
I hadn't pulled The Astral Symphony off the shelf for a while, and the sonic differences were pretty astounding, and that's a master that's already quite aged. I can only imagine how this might sound today.
I just replaced those tracks on my iPod.
