Personally I'm content with the Ryko/Varese Sarabande reissue. I've seen the movie and just as you stated alot of cues were really short and Williams did a brilliant job putting them together in longer ones. I think other unreleased Williams scores would have higher priority over this one. If there are any left...

One of my least favorite Williams scores, but I do hope it gets a good release with original tracks for those who would like that. Which is sad, because it's one of his most interesting and tuneful scores IMHO. It's easy to score a western with a 90 piece orchestra, it's a little harder doing it with a 12 piece Bluegrass Band. The Love theme is really beautiful. It's interesting to note that the soundtrack recording was done in New York (where the director was based) and it has been reported that Williams was very unhappy with that recording, which is why he re-recorded the score in LA with the top session players for album release. Ford A. Thaxton

It's interesting to note that the soundtrack recording was done in New York (where the director was based) and it has been reported that Williams was very unhappy with that recording, which is why he re-recorded the score in LA with the top session players for album release. Ford A. Thaxton I know that's the story, but I don't think it was the reason for the re-recording in Hollywood - I think he wanted to consolidate into longer arrangements as he likes to do - those arrangements don't really reflect the score as heard in the film and after having lived with both now for a many weeks, I like the leaner, meaner film tracks much more. The mix of the LP is loaded with reverb and not great reverb as it muddies the clarity, IMO. But one of the reasons I don't necessarily believe the story is that the playing on the original tracks is very good. Whether the session was a trial or not is not relevant - the result is what's relevant and I have to believe that a post-Jaws Williams who'd been truly unhappy with the result would have simply insisted on re-recording it for the film itself - small group, not that expensive. He does praise the musicians at the session - several times - that's the fun of listening to the masters - Williams is all over them. He also gets a little terse a couple of times, but if you've ever heard Mr. Herrmann or Mr. Goldsmith's terse, Williams' terse is even-keeled, low-key, and kind of nice Since I kind of like the film a lot, I am thrilled the original tracks are finally here. As I said in the other thread, it's a completely different listening experience and, for me, the one I like better since it IS the film music rather than arrangements of the film music as done for the LP.

This one must be due an expanded release soon, surely? You're away Kritzerland is releasign it tomorrow, right? Little excited, Justin? Sorry about that -- I had a V-8, ate my Weaties, had some Ovaltine, and stayed at a Holiday Express last night. Then I took Shatner's awesome away from him, and defeated Chuck Norris swiflty with both hands tied behind my back, which ended in also shaving his beard off and eating it. I'm still a little dizzy from all of it.

The rumor I've heard is that this might be announced in the morning come hell or high or even low water.
