I recently finished this 4 1/2 hour 1995 Mini Series from Larry McMurtry's novel. This was one of the sequels to the enormously successful 'Lonesome Dove' book/film. I've now seen all of the sequels except for 'Return to Lonesome Dove' which reportedly is not well liked. However 'Streets of Laredo' is by far the best of the sequels, and much better than last years 'Commanche Moon'. 'Laredo' had a cast including James Garner, Wes Studi, Randy Quaid, Sam Shepard, Ned Beatty (as Judge Roy Bean), Sonia Braga, a totally unrecognizeable George Carlin and the film is grounded by an exceptional Sissy Spacek. Solidly Directed by Joseph Sargent and vividly photographed by Edward Pei. Pei won an ASC Award for Best Shot Mini-Series (gorgeous Dawns, Sunsets and that special hour of Twilight.)
I really liked composer David Shire's music here. There's an interwoven tapestry of the famous 'Streets of Laredo' melody, but his original score is simply outstanding! Did Shire release any of this score on any other cd's? It would make a great release, but since it was a tv film of many years ago, I suppose it's out of the question(?) Fans of Westerns take note of this film, and you don't have to have read or seen the other books or films to enjoy this one!

Great series. I remember it well from the mid 90's, as it was also shown on Norwegian TV. This was my first real introduction to James Garner. Can't remember much of the music, though, but cool to know that it was Shire who did it.

I watched this on disc recently and was once again reminded of what a good score Shire provided for it. An oft overlooked gem of his career. Shire was obviously inspired by this project and it's truly evident here. James Garner's take on the Woodrow Call role made famous by Tommy Lee Jones is one of my favorite performances by him. The film is beautifully shot with a superb supporting cast of pro's. IMHO Shire's music for "Streets" is one of the best television scores I've heard in a long time and hopefully one day it will find it's way to cd.

David Bell composed additional score for the project, as told by him or Shire in an itnerview years ago.

I've not heard this one yet, but sounds like one worth checking out.

Still hoping that a label will take an interest in releasing this score if possible. Just watching bits of the movie again today and enjoying the score very much. David Shire at his very best.
