Few composers have such a long past in network television music as Dick DeBenedictis. A native of New Milford, New Jersey, DeBenedictis never saw himself as a film composer right up until his first commission! He was thrown into the deep end so to speak... Over four decades he provided music for classic episodes of Columbo, Matlock, Father Dowling, Diagnosis Murder and tons of other series' which may not be as well known today. This was all written in addition to a rich background in writing for musical theatre, another major forte of the composer. In my interview with Dick DeBenedictis, we revisit all these shows with a special focus on select episodes of Columbo where Dick had to write music for murderous musicians!

Good interview. DeBenedictis did most of my favourite music from Columbo.

Yes, very interesting. I was always amazed at how closely
DeBenedictis' music resembled Goldenberg's, for the 70's
COLUMBO, at least. In fact both of their scores sound like they
were composed by one person, even in the orchestrations.

Good interview! Interesting how DeBenedictis thought that going into score Hawaii Five-O was intimidating for him, what with the stable of composers who already set the template and created some of the best TV music ever.

Another nice interview, Cat. Glad to know that the guy is still around. Years ago, a friend of mine was doing this small-scale film music fanzine and he had a taped telephone conversation with Mr DeBenedictis that I transcribed for him. Inevitably, your interview covered a lot of the same ground, and so the memories came flooding back!

Completely agree with Den's comment from six years ago (!)

I caught by chance an episode from Season 3 of COLUMBO on the telly when back hame in the auld country - "Lovely But Lethal", with Vera Miles, Martin Sheen and Vincent Price. I was saying to my brother (another old hand at this game) - "Oh, that's so definitely Billy Goldenberg". When the name "Dick De Benedictis came up at the end I thought it was a mistake.

I think he used some of the same instrumentation in Season 2's "The Most Crucial Game". I'm sure Thomas (member) had some of that up on YouTube - is that a vibraslap doing the percussion? Whatever, great music, and enormously similar to that of Billy Goldenberg.

I could investigate the following myself, but I can't be bothered, so I want you all to give me your opinions - How did the scores of Dick De Benedictis evolve throughout the '80s and into the present day? Did he always seem to sound in the shadow of Goldenberg? Did his work lose some of that unique '70s edge when doing stuff like "DIAGNOSIS: MURDER" and the new "PERRY MASON"? I imagine it did, but you tell me.

And when can we get the COLUMBO Box Set spotlighting the best music from the series (by De Benedictis, Gil Mellé, Billy Goldenberg and Oliver Nelson)?

I worked for Dick on Diagnosis Murder, Columbo, and several other TV shows and the sessions where always fun and challenging musically. Such a nice guy. He is so good at what he does.

Dick DeBenedictis told me in a telephone conversation that Billy Goldenberg was his mentor and owes a lot to him as far as his career went on television.
