Anyone else out there like me? Most of your favourite albums, when loaded onto iTunes, don't give cover art at all? Or if they do, it's either wrong, of really poor quality, or not the original cover art?

I've been adding my music library, including all my film scores, to my iTunes and where possible, I insist on having as exact a likeness of the original LP art as possible. So I've started, very slowly mind you, to upload this artwork to Photobucket. Most are restored (cleaned up, etc.) LP artwork, as faithfully reproduced as possible; others are custom covers for soundtracks etc. that didn't actually have a proper cover (e.g. the soundtrack to DEAD MEN DON'T WEAR PLAID); still others, like BEN-HUR, have been customized to fit the iTunes format (square covers for things like rectangular box set covers); and many, like BREAKHEART PASS, are scans of CD artwork so that the cover art is larger, clearer, and as free of pixelation as possible.

Here are the links for those who may be interested:

As I say, I only have a few up right now but in the coming weeks I'll keep posting more. Please post comments on Photobucket if you like or come back to this thread and make suggestions.

If you have your own site with such artwork, please feel free to post it here as well. (In the coming weeks, a lot more soundtracks and a heap of Elvis Presley cover art, most of which has sadly been botched by Sony/BMG when they're released on CD.)

I acquired a lot of my artwork from here -

http://www.soundtrackcollector.com/

Look up a title, and they usually have 300 x 300 JPEGS of the various releases - even old LP covers.

Yes, I agree, though I find 300 x 300 sometimes a bit too small and some of the artwork isn't cleaned up. Don't get me wrong, I love the site and the surprisingly large number of soundtracks "cover-arted" on there, but I'm a bit o.c.d. about my cover art so I tend to clean them up. Some of the ones they have I've also cleaned up a bit and definitely use; I love their site for that!

Hope you like some of the ones I've posted, Sarge, and as I say there'll be more on the way.

I just use Amazon or Soundtrack Collector.

I'm very much the same, but even if it's a little rough-looking, I love being able to grab the old LP artwork.

I mean, check out this original artwork for THE ROAD WARRIOR... how cool is that?

Again, Amazon mostly has very pixelated images or the images are dirty or the wrong colour. For those who aren't picky, I guess it's fine, but if you're picky like me, you tailor your own cover art. It's also a lot of fun for when I get a bit of down time.

In any case, take a look as I put more artwork up and enjoy if it works for you!

I had totally forgotten about the original artwork for THE ROAD WARRIOR until I, too, found it online a while back. The cover you posted is the one I use for my iPod, too, though yours is much bigger and clearer, as I recall. Cool!

Sgt., I took the cover art you posted (and, it seems, it's the same one I had but I couldn't for the life of me remember where I got it from) and cleaned it up - got rid of the cellophane in the scan, deepened the blacks, etc. Check that link (see above) for it in a cleaner version.

Any idea, btw, which is the actual original LP art? The Varese or this?:

Yeah, a great choice for Sgt. to post; it's one of those perfect examples of album art that's no longer on the CD (which in this case is now just a pic of Mel on the roadway).

Here's the cleaned up version, from my little Photobucket archives (link for the full Photobucket photo album, which I'm working on expanding day by day, is above in this link):

A few more beauts for you to enjoy!:

HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP. Great album cover, restored to resemble the original as closely as possible. Enjoy!

DEAD MEN DON'T WEAR PLAID. Custom cover I made for my iPod, to replace the generic Rozsa cover for the Prometheus CD.

ENEMY MINE. Restored Varese album cover, which are always slightly different from the CD covers.

DUCK, YOU SUCKER - Restored LP Artwork. (This one took a loooong time. The LP it was scanned from was in really rough shape, so it's one of the ones I'm most proud of.)

CASINO ROYALE - Restored LP Artwork (1967).

Not completely on-topic, sorry:

Cover art has been a lost (or at least mislaid) art form since the invention of the CD...

I dug out my old Powerslave sleeve and my fiancee (post-LP age) spent a while looking through its little details and jokes just as I did as a teenager:

There are definitely so many great LP jackets, and I also remember staring at some of them for hours, or discussing their merits with friends, looking for the artists' or bands' little inside jokes as well.

These are GREAT! Can you post a huge pic of the DARK OF THE SUN LP cover?
I have a few questions for Accidental Genius -
1) Do you know of anyone that will print LP sized prints of old LP covers?
I asked someone at Kinkos, but they said it's illegal to print copywrited
artwork. I want to be able to print the covers from my 60's and 70's LPs
so I can frame them. Purchasing the theatrical posters is too expensive.
If I could do this I'd sell or give away the LPs.
2) How do you create these? Are there 12 x 12 scanners and printers?

This has to be Australian / European artwork, since they're calling it MAD MAX 2.

Jesus, that's a great image... I'm gonna use it!

There are scanners that big. There's a copy place where I know the folks and they're willing to do it. They know me and know that I don't plan on using them for commercial purposes - I just haven't gotten around to taking anything there yet. I've heard you can do it at some print places and they just make you sign a waiver or something, but other print places don't care; they just want your money, which I've heard isn't cheap to scan items.

However, if you have a good digital camera and fairly flat light (that is, that won't change the colours in your image), you can set up a stand and tripod and take pictures of the LP, making sure it's nicely in focus. Then just use Photoshop or your fave program to crop and clean.

Some of the covers I have are from images I've found on the net - images which were really badly aged and I had to pixel-by-pixel fix them up, brighten colours, etc. I'll often use ebay images as reference. Heck, I've occasionally found the images ON ebay and cleaned those up, too, but often the pictures aren't straight on so they're too crooked to use.

When I've scanned my own images, I sadly have to scan four quadrants and carefully stitch them back together, with varying results. I'll post the most successful one I have like that, because of its graphic simplicity: Carpenter's THE THING. As an LP cover, I prefer it over the Varese one. Love both, but prefer the stark graphics of the LP cover. Enjoy!:

Yeah, fanTAStic image! Not mine - I found it on the net as is. (If you look at the left side of the image, it seems like it might be a CD booklet and not an LP.)

Since this is pretty much becoming just soundtracks, does anyone know how/if this can be moved to the General Discussion section instead of just here?
