Thanks Mark. These are strange waters that we swim in, and your astute analysis is welcome for the benefit of future historians (if any) who might wonder what all this meant. I especially liked your extension of the "watermelon" metaphor. Nice.

You forgot 'C&C'. wink

Regarding the 'watermelon', even though it's round, it also has TWO sides. Because I would think it would be just as non-constructive and weird if someone took the watermelon and yelled:

- "WOOHOO! THIS WATERMELON ROCKS! I'M BUYING IT!"

This aspect seems to be largely ignored, for some reason.

Also, I must admit that I haven't encountered the "The Grand Poobah" nomer much around here, neither in regard to Lukas nor anyone else. A few times, perhaps, but enough to be a staple "FSM term"?

Great blog post, Joe. Should it also be mentioned that Doug @ Intrada is also referred to as the Grand Poobah? This title seems more commonly attributed to him, I think, than to Lukas. (Anyway, everyone's a critic. Great blog!)

.....Bottle Cap collectors have been known to adopt graven images such as the white ponytail and worship at the alter of composer X.....

Wonderful blog, Mark.

There must be many more you can come up with! As suggested, "C & C" sounds like a natural, with "Limited Edition/Limited Pressing", "Blue Box", and "Golden Age/Silver Age", among others.

But, in the quoted sentence, you may want to alter "alter" to "altar". smile

For the sake of full disclosure, I must admit that I am one of these people (must be able to poke fun at oneself so as not to take yourself too seriously), although I'm still not fully committed to bottle cap collecting. There are just some scores of Jerry's that I haven't bought yet mainly because I don't care for scores to comedies all that much. One day though if they aren't totally out of print and commanding outrageous bucks and I have a lot of extra dough, I'll probably finally add these bottle caps to my collection!

Doh! That was the last thing I typed at around 2:30 a.m. and it just slipped by me (and of course the spell check wouldn't flag it). Thanks for the correction manderely (which I made)!

As for using Grand Poobah, I was just searching for something of more of a humorous term at the end of writing the blog and I remember this one being used just a few times before on the boards. Probably should have gone with something more frequently used, but I was at a loss at that point for some reason! I'll add Doug Fake into the blog to make it more legit!

That's what I like about blogs, they are living documents that you can constantly update...and I do!

Reading what people say here, I'm looking forward to reading Mark's post.

I will add that my favorite extension of the "watermelon" idea is the person who gave the example of someone declaring in the hypothetical open-air market, "Farmer Kendall's melons are bad and I will not buy them!"

I'm sorely tempted to refer to LK as "Farmer Kendall" from now on.

You forgot 'C&C'. wink

And exactly that is my question: What does C&C stand for?

I've mentioned this a couple of times in the past (and it was just as lame those two times as it will be now) but I think that, in relation to the message board anyway, the initials FSM more or less stand for Fellows Scrutinizing Minutia.
