Among the great film composers, Kenyon Hopkins is surely one of the most under-represented on CD.

That is about to change.

All of these boutique labels are hard at work to finally bring you many of Kenyon Hopkins's great film scores on CD in 2014.

2008 was the year of Gary McFarland.

2009 was the year of Les Baxter.

2014 will be THE YEAR OF KENYON HOPKINS.

I'm saving my pennies and I will be the first in line to buy.

All of these boutique film score labels are hard at work to finally bring you many of Kenyon Hopkins's great film scores on CD in 2010.

Thanks to the great labels for finally making this happen!

I'm really happy to hear this -- I have "what there is" of Hopkins' scores available on CD at present (BABY DOLL and THE FUGITIVE KIND), and would love to have more. What is the source of your optimism, and which scores can we expect to see in 2010?

The Hustler. His best. I'm still waiting. Me and Fast Eddie are getting impatient.

Ditto- it's a pretty sparse score, though.

I've got the LP. Enough there for me. And Fast Eddie. And you too I suspect.

Until then, check out this compilation of 31 Hopkins recordings, some film music, but mostly a hodgepodge of stuff: www.basichipdigitalgold.com/basichip/kenyon_hopkins/stream.m3u located at this small but cool 50s & 60s Space Age Pop music archive site: http://www.basichip.com/

Leaving aside any previously unreleased scores, if we could only get the previously issued LPs, we'd have:

East Side, West Side [Columbia]
The Hustler [Kapp]
Lilith [Colpix]
Mister Buddwing [Verve]
The Reporter [Columbia]
The Strange One [Coral]
This Property Is Condemned [Verve]
The Yellow Canary [Verve]

I certainly hope so. I only have Baby Doll and The Fugitive Kind on CD and The Hustler on LP, but they're all so good (especially The Hustler), I would love to hear more of his music.

Sorry to be repeating myself, but is this thread just an OnyaBirri wet dream, or is there some information behind it?

There's also the RCA Victor LP of ELEVEN AGAINST THE ICE

It's funny but on the theory less is more I have never been able to forget this simple theme he wrote for 12 ANGRY MEN a film I think would have won the Oscar if not for the monumental BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI coming out the same year.

Theme is at 2:40

The answer isn't obvious?

Let’s look at the Hopkins LPs that haven’t been released:

East Side, West Side [Columbia] - Owned by Sony
Eleven Against the Ice [RCA] – Owned by Sony
The Hustler [Kapp] – Owned by Universal Music Group
Lilith [Colpix] – Owned by Warner Music Group
Mister Buddwing [Verve] – Owned by Universal Music Group
The Reporter [Columbia] – Owned by Sony
The Strange One [Coral] - – Owned by Universal Music Group
This Property Is Condemned [Verve] – Owned by Universal Music Group
The Yellow Canary [Verve] – Owned by Universal Music Group

As is often the case, Universal Music Group is the big offender here. No Frank Skinner from them . . . and no Kenyon Hopkins.

Let’s look at the Hopkins scores that have not been previously released, and their prospects:

12 Angry Men (1957, United Artists) – A very brief score (basically opening and closing titles) whose tracks probably no longer exist.

Wild River (1960, 20th Century Fox) – Still possible.

Wild In the Country (1961, 20th Century Fox) – This is an Elvis Presley film that has had an RCA LP/CD release of Presley’s songs. Whether that would complicate a score release is anyone’s guess.

Doctor, You’ve Got To Be Kidding (1967, M-G-M) – This should have been available to FSM. Maybe because it’s a comedy, there was not much interest by Lukas.

The Borgia Stick (1967, Universal) – TV movie. Possible, I guess.

A Lovely Way To Die (1968, Universal) – Possible, I guess.

The Secret of Michelangelo (1968, ABC Productions) – TV movie, presumably now owned by Disney.

The Tree (1969) – An independent film written, produced, directed, and distributed by someone named Robert Guenette. He undoubtedly owns it as well.

The First Time (1969, United Artists) – If tracks exist for this Mirisch-Rogallan production, they should be with M-G-M.

Downhill Racer (1969, Paramount) – Unlikely, being part of that “lost decade” of Paramount scores.

The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau (1970, David L. Wolper / Metromedia) – Hopkins scored two episodes of this series: “The Water Planet” and “The Night of the Squid.” If Wolper controls these, they probably lie with Warner Bros. If Metromedia controls them, M-G-M is the likely place to look.

The New Healers (1972, Paramount) – TV movie. Unlikely, being part of that “lost decade” of Paramount scores.

The World Turned Upside Down (1973, ABC / David L. Wolper) – TV documentary. Could be with Warner Bros. (Wolper) or Disney (ABC).

Lincoln: Trial By Fire (1974, ABC / David L. Wolper) – TV documentary. Could be with Warner Bros. (Wolper) or Disney (ABC).

ABC Afterschool Special: Dinky Hocker (1979, ABC) – Disney? Hopkins probably got the scoring job for this because Robert Guenette was one of the producers.

Bob, you a are a wealth of knowledge and an asset to this forum.

I am waiting for Kritzerland to release something by Kenyon Hopkins. He is right up their alley.

Hopkins isn't a name often on my radar but oddly I just happened to record Downhill Racer, which I'd never seen. I was watching the opening titles (not knowing who the composer was or even if the movie had a score) and was quickly impressed by the stylization of the title sequence and then instantly surprised by the fact that not only was there an orchestral score rather than a song or even a pop/rock-style instrumental, but that Hopkins' music emphasized action and suspense--exactly the opposite of what I expected. Definitely interesting work.

We forgot to list "The Fugitive Kind" among these films and albums.

That's one of the few titles that we DO have on CD, albeit in the OOP FSM MGM Treasury box set.

Sorry, but including ONE Kenyon Hopkins title in a grossly overpriced, non-Kenyon Hopkins box set does not qualify as a release, in the OP's opinion. I can buy the original LP for far less money than that box.

So "Baby Doll" is the only one to have an official release, in my opinion.

Er ... alter that year to 2017.

How many pennies has OnyaBirri been saving since 2014 for the next Kenyon Hopkins disc? (which sounds like it'll be The Hustler via Intrada)
