This is a score that really needs a better album representation. It's one of Hans Zimmer's best scores of the 1990s. The two main score themes are great, the prophecy theme (usually heard on strings or pan flute) and the tragedy theme (heard in epic moments with the aid of a choir). The Lion King also has a heavy influence from his early African works, which adds variety.

Too bad it's a very popular Disney film which means that a better album representation will never happen.

Never say "never". Hans did say he'll consider looking into a complete release. It's my all-time favourite score and a proper score release will be a real dream come true! smile

Where did he mention this, if you don't mind my asking?

That would be amazing. I'm not too much a Zimmer fan, but I absolutely love his score for this film. Hopefully it will indeed be expanded one day!

I'm a big Zimmer fan, but this is not a particular favorite. I only have the tracks on a tape, actually. I guess I have to put them on again. The additional score track Hyenas is a quite difficult listen, by the way...

Say what you will about Zimmer, but he seems like a pretty great dude (in interviews, at least).

Let me guess, not enough use of synths.....

"Hyenas" is a largely unused track from the score. It marks the fun, sinister writing for Uncle Scar that was all but dropped from the finished picture. If you listen close enough, you'll hear a theme that later resurfaced in Peacemaker.

While I am not a Zimmer fan, I think this is a truly great score. He deserved to get his only Oscar for it and it certainly deserves at least a significantly expanded release. Most of the best parts were left off the Disney album.

On the official website you can now see the official music products which will come with the release of Lion King on Blu-Ray. And what do we get: Nothing! Oh yea ... tadaaa ... a new song compilation, what a great idea ... I hate you, disney! I hate you so much!

Well, perhaps with the new Intrada/Disney thing going on now, we just might finally see a complete LION KING - I know I would pick up a CD of this fine score - I'm not too big on Zimmer, but this one I really do like, along with RAIN MAN and DRIVING MISS DAISY...:-)

No kidding... what a bunch of dicks! I mean, partnering with a a record label like Intrada and releasing for the very first time on CD scores like Up and Squanto.

DOWN WITH DISNEY!

Squato was a 'normal' special collection release. Just like Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Ten little Indiands, Something Wicked, Baby, etc etc

Does it really matter what kind of release it is... Intrada partnering with Disney is going to bring us some gems that we never thought would ever be released in our lifetime!

This is one of the few Zimmer scores I really really like, so evocative and stirring. It needs an expanded release so much!!

The search function does not bring up the new thread (what do I need to type in instead of "The Lion King" or "Hans Zimmer"?) so I will post in this one:

- the new expanded release is magnificent and brings to light what makes this score truly one of Hans Zimmer´s best works. The original release offered just a pale shadow of the score.

Highly recommended!
