A friend of mine assures me that the song Lost In the Night, heard on Bryson's 1990 album, uses a backing track straight off one of the cues from Days of Thunder. The track is also co-credited to Zimmer as writer (it's produced I believe by Walter Affanasieff).
I have Peabo's "Super Hits" album that this song is on. While I don't know if the song was created for DOT, it certainly feature Zimmer's composition, albeit in arranged form. The major parts are there, the keyboard line, the percussion, just more expanded.
Well, as it wouldn't be the first time Zimmer wrote a song for a film (I'll Be Holding On for Black Rain and of course The Last Note Of Freedom for Days of Thunder -- both excellent songs!) it probably was written for the film. And probably bumped for a more 'bankable' artist. Probably Maria McKee.

Well, Zimmer also wrote Letting Go for Terence Trent D'Arby for the movie The Fan. An underrated song with the chorus based on Zimmer's main theme:
With due respect to Zimmer, I do wonder how involved he was in the songwriting process on all of these songs. As with many film songs, it could have just simply been that his score was used as a backing track (for which he'd get a credit anyway), albeit with vocals sung over the top and the production altered by a song producer (s).
Maybe he was part of a formal songwriting process on all of the films, who knows? I think it can generally be agreed though that his music composition lends itself rather effortlessly to pop songs, which I don't think is the case for all film music at all.
The song producers he has had overseeing his songs over the years have been a whos who of the cream of the pop world, too.
