Does anyone know if there are any plans by any label to release the soundtrack for the John Wayne movies Chisum 1970 and The Train Robbers 1973? Both scores are by Dominic Frontiere and I would love to see these fine scores released. Any information on these 2 scores is appreciated!

Thanks!

Robert

Bob, seems to me I remember somebody here (Lukas?) saying that the masters are MIA--that's a damned shame as they are two of Frontiere's best efforts. There are two "okay" short suites out there of these two scores on a German 2 disk set of western themes and suites conducted by William Motzig.

What a shame! Love both of them.

I wouldn't be surprised if the original tapes are in the Batjac archive. Somebody would have to negotiate with Wayne's estate to search for them. Contacting them and negotiating with them is not an easy thing to do, I understand.

On Any Sunday the motorcycle documentary with Steve McQueen was also a neat DF score. His football activities got him into a little trouble.

from Wikipedia:
Criminal history
In 1986, Frontiere was incarcerated for nine months in a federal penitentiary for scalping tickets to the 1980 Super Bowl, which he obtained through his then-wife, Los Angeles Rams owner Georgia Frontiere.[3] He was estimated to have scalped as many as 16,000 tickets, making a half million dollars in profit that he failed to report to the Internal Revenue Service. Frontiere pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a year and one day in prison, three years probation, and fined $15,000 for failing to report income from the sale of the tickets and for lying to the IRS.[4][5] Georgia Frontiere filed for divorce shortly after Dominic's release from prison.[3]

Gives a new meaning to Hang em' High.

He should have stuck to film music which he obviously did a lot better than his short life in crime. He turned 79 in June.

That's possible. That might also be the case with "McLintock!" And "Cahill: United States Marshal" also hasn't made an appearance, although Lukas was able to find tapes for "The Green Berets" and "McQ" at Warners. All of those were Batjac productions. Where did the tracks for "Big Jake" come from?

BIG JAKE was a Cinema Center film. Don't know who has rights on those films these days although some of those scores have shown up. (I'd love to see Schifrin's PRIME CUT come out paired with his other Cinema Center effort, the now totally forgotten THE CHRISTIAN LICORICE STORE.)

"Big Jake" was co-produced by Batjac Productions and Cinema Center Films and released by National General Pictures. In general, the Cinema Center Films materials are held by Paramount, but since Batjac retains the copyright for "Big Jake," who knows. Prometheus found the mono tracks somewhere for a 2001 CD release.

Thanks everyone for their responses. Look forward to even more responses! As has been stated, The Green Berets and MCQ are both Batjac Productions owned by Warner Brothers and Film Score Monthly has released both of these soundtracks. So, maybe that means that Chisum and The Train Robbers, both Batjac Productions also owned by Warner Brothers, could also be released by Film Score Monthly, Intrada, or LaLa Land. I hope these 2 fine scores get released sometime soon. As, for Big Jake, Big Jake and Rio Lobo have been released by Prometeus Records around 2001. Rio Lobo is out of print, but you can still purchase Big Jake at SAE for around $24.95. Rio Lobo and Big Jake were both Cinema Center Films that were released by National General. Cinema Center Films was a company I believe started by CBS for film Production. Paramount, which owns CBS, naturally now owns Rio Lobo and Big Jake.

Take Care!

Robert

Has anything developed from perhaps Universal Studios on Chisum yet?

Chisum is a favorite score of mine, I sure would like to see a cd.

I saw Chisum when it first came out in 1970 in Long Beach CA. When the Duke first appeared, on his horse on the hill, the audience started to cheer! Nothing unusual about the film, just well done and a lot of fun.

Still no Chisum. I would love to see this appear. As for the Train Robbers . . . I can say that the session tapes do exist. I found this out recently. I will not get into how, where or why. Hopefully this will come out soon!!

Train Robbers would be a dream come true. Such a tuneful western score. Hope this happens with Chisum. Should be an instant buy for those who appreciate great 70s western scores.

It's now 2021 and neither CHISUM or THE TRAIN ROBBERS have made an appearance on any label. Are they off the label's radar ? Are they more interested in expanding and re-issuing scores that have already seen the light of day on CD ?

Love to see Train Robbers on CD. Chisum too. Very deserved of preservation. I can only hope a label is, or has been working on them.

For more Frontiere, let's also not forget Barquero!

He really had a talent for Westerns, what a pity he came late to a (temporarily) dying genre.
