Flipping randomly through my CD collection today made me realize how many truly great scores have been written for movies based on Stephen King novels. Examples:

-Carrie (Pino Donaggio)

-The Dead Zone (Michael Kamen)

-Cujo (Charles Bernstein)

-Misery (Marc Shaiman)

-Needful Things (Patrick Doyle)

-The Dark Half (Christopher Young)

-The Shawshank Redemption (Thomas Newman)

-Apt Pupil (John Ottman)

-The Green Mile (Thomas Newman)

Any other cool King scores?

Nicholas Pike wrote a terrific score for the TV miniseries of THE SHINING, available as a promo from the usual outlets. Ditto your opinion on SHAWSHANK (gotta be the very best) and THE DARK HALF.

Love "Shawshank," but I really like the music for his mini-series, "The Stand" by W.G. Snuffy Walden. Nice piano music.

Also like John Carpter's score for "Christine."

Walther Carlos score from The Shining (only two tracks). They have only been released on LP, I think it was a Warner release.
But the greatest Stephen King score is "Needfull Things" by Patrick Doyle.

Needful Things is killer.

If you don't have it, GET IT.

Shawshank Redemption it tops in my book, especially the final scene/credits. Beautiful.

Dolores Claiborne is my fave as well. Speaking of Nicholas Pike, his score for Sleepwalkers was pretty fun too!! Jay Chattaway did a decent job with Silver Bullet and Silvestri's score for Cat's Eye had that tongue-in-cheek attitude that worked so well. Carrie is the ONLY Dinnagio score I can tolerate (and only the main theme). Dead Zone is excellent!! Carpenter's Christine was good, although Tangerine Dream butchered Firestarter (who'da thought?). Not sure who did 'Salem's Lot or It. Wendy Carlos for Kubrick's Shining was near to horrible, but hands down worst King film score has to be ACDC's work on Maximum Overdrive.

Before I forget...one of my favorite scores to a King film is Jonathan Elias' s score to Children of the Corn.

SALEM'S LOT was scored by veteran B-movie and tv composer Harry Sukman, who passed away in 1984.

Hi, Sheriff. I do really agree. Maximum Overdrive was nothing but crap (I do also hate the movie!)

NEEDFULL THINGS is still no. 1! (I got my japanese SLC copy signed by Patrick Doyle at the Vlandern Film Festival the day after the Hans Zimmer concert in Belgium.

Without question, Pino Donaggio's score for "Carrie".

I agree with Senor Maher. (Oh and uh, by the way, John---I finally got around to hearing Donaggio's DRESSED TO KILL. So I now understand why it's your all-time fave score. You also said that you got the impression that Donaggio was musically mocking the movie's characters. I haven't seen the movie. But something tells me that Donaggio might be stylistically narrow-minded. His ubiquitous soaring strings might be stylistically inappropriate for certain movie scenes.)

And I can easily understand why Sheriff Joe dislikes Donaggio. Let's face it---Donaggio is an Italian cliche of a composer. From the 101-strings school of Italianate melodicism. There's too much of those soaring strings and not enough instrumental variety & textural craftsmanship. But nevertheless, the first 90 seconds of the Theme from CARRIE is nothing short of a miracle.

I just picked up my first score to a Stephen King flick (CUJO) and I've begun reading King's works lately, starting with some of his short stories and now Carrie, so I figured I'd revive this 14 year-old thread. Any more opinions? What are the must-have scores from films based on Stephen King's stories and novels?

SHAWSHANK still stands heads and shoulders above everyone else, IMO.

But some other great scores for King adaptations include CARRIE, CHILDREN OF THE CORN, FIRESTARTER, THE RUNNING MAN, THE DARK HALF, NEEDFUL THINGS, DOLORES CLAIBORNE, THE GREEN MILE.

That's mostly about album experiences, though. If we include scores that are very effective in the movie, but that don't necessarily work that well for me (on album), one would need to include stuff like PET SEMATARY, THE SHINING, THE MIST, DREAMCATCHER and others.

Misery by Marc Shaiman. One of his first film scores and one of his very best. Really captures the atmosphere nicely.

I think Dolores Claiborne is on the top of my list.

Other honorable mentions are for:

• The Dark Half (spooky!)
• Running Man (it rocks!)
• Dead Zone (scary!)
• Cujo (overwhelming!)
• Needfull Things (beautiful!)
