I'm genuinely intrigued to know what people find so enthusiastic about this score. It's high on many people's favs lists. Why is this score so popular? The style and sound of the music? The cult classic status of the film? Jay Chattaway? All the above? Why does this one stand out?

MANIAC is fine. MANIAC COP (also Chattaway) *is* a classic!

Yeah, strange choice to do an LP.

Yes, and his score to VIGILANTE is fun, too.

Yes, I'm told by Lars (of the Alamo Drafthouse) who wrote the liner notes for the MANIAC LP that they wanted to do VIGILANTE, but getting Fania, who own the rights, to sign off on it was an issue. Hopefully, those will be cleared up sometime soon and we'll get a legit release of VIGILANTE.

Whatabout the fourth colaboration of Lustig and Chattaway (Maniac, Vigilante, Maniac Cop) to the movie Relentless? This Morricone/Herrmann inspired score would be fun to have too (along with Maniac Cop 2)

Not really...there are plenty of collectors, audiophiles, pop / jazz / classical aficionados, etc. who gobble up vinyl and reissues like these. The newly commissioned, garish artwork is probably as big a sell as the 200 gram vinyl. This is about the film as well as the music...the MANIAC COP franchise has a big cult following, but the cultural impact of Lustig's debut, MANIAC, is greater.

As for MANIAC, it's a watershed film for the folks, such as Lars Nilsen, who program the Alamo Drafthouse (and other similar venues around the country) and the audiences who flock to these places, i.e. the Alamo, New Beverly, Cinefamily, Exhumed Films, 92Y Tribeca, etc. Mondo, like the Drafthouse, is based in Austin and the two are closely associated.

As a man who can enjoy all types of films, the film Maniac was to me one of the most annoying sleazist film i ever saw, just nerve wracking, i pity Jay having to put music to that film.

I might buy this if it were re-released on CD, but LP? No thanks... never mind the fact that I don't even own a record player.

You can also view the LP's back cover art/tracklist and post comments here:

I saw the movie once about 10 years ago, and like Joe Spinell, it was sweaty and disturbing, but I really dig Chattaway's creepy, atmospheric synth score. We have the "shape CD" version of the SouthEast Records release, which is actually cut into the shape you see below and packaged in a jewel case with a tray card (back insert), but no booklet, so you can see the disc through the front of the case:

Despite its odd shape, it plays fine in most CD players (it can't be played in "jukebox style" CD players or in the car stereo type that "grabs" the CD when you push it into the slot).

The other version, released at the same time by the same label, is a standard, circular disc, packaged in a digipak with this cover art:

Both versions are out of print.
