Since I'm relatively new to BluRay and discovering all of its magic, I thought it would be fun to start a thread where FSM BluRay freaks can comment about what they've watched lately and gush in the glory of high definition. Posting covers/images are welcome. And yeah we can talk about disappointments, too, but gushing is more pleasant (though when I put in Close Encounters of The Third Kind to check it out, I was horrified). For example... Yesterday I watched the 50th Anniversary edition of Hitchcock's North by Northwest. Holy cow. It really looked incredible. The picture quality was razor sharp. I couldn't get over it. This is what happens almost every time I watch a BluRay. I'm just stunned. And ya know, it sure is nice to see a classic movie with REAL COLORS. Blues and greens and reds and yellows that stand out as opposed to the desaturated boring look that so many modern films have. This BluRay presentation gets a 10 outta 10 from me! I'll be back to comment from time to time after I watch a new BluRay. I encourage others to do the same! You were horrified when you saw Close Encounters of the Third Kind? That title is one of the best Blu-rays out there. Blu-ray has definitely made me appreciate classic titles even more. If a movie is restored properly, and put on the BD properly, then it almost feels like I'm watching film being projected. Unfortunately, there are still examples of studios that mess up either of the two steps, or both (I'm looking at you, Universal).

You were horrified when you saw Close Encounters of the Third Kind? That title is one of the best Blu-rays out there. I put in the BD to check out a few scenes, and I was staggered by what looked to me like poor picture quality. I'm not talking about just aged grain; I don't have a problem with grain. But the image on Close Encounters looked as though it had some murky filter over it. I can't articulate very well what I mean, but I still need to watch the full film. Maybe I'll feel differently after that.

I got a portable Blu-Ray player a couple months ago because that gives me the flexibility to take Blu-Ray titles on the move and also to hook them up to my regular TV. But so far I've kept the number of titles limited since I've noticed that some were not exactly made to look all that better on Blu-Ray from their standard release (Towering Inferno). OTOH, "Ten Commandments", "Ben-Hur", "How The West Was Won" (in the "Smilebox" format) and "The Bible" have all looked spectacular. Ben-Hur is a must-buy for me in the near future!

Visited yesterday on BluRay: Misery - As great as ever, just a timeless classic. Picture quality was fantastic. One thing odd though was the sound mix. During some dialogue scenes in the guest bedroom, Kathy Bates' voice has an echo, like the dialogue track is being said twice. It happens at least a dozen times in the movie here and there. I didn't mess with sound settings on the stereo to see if that corrected it. Strikes me a mastering problem with the disc itself, but I'm not certain. If anybody else heard this slightly annoying defect, do let me know...

To MR Sones- Blue Ray really makes one realize how beautiful the older films in color were. But as you say the new films are not as nice, well that's life, you just can't have it all.

I have a question. I bought a BluRay about a year ago. Loved watching DVDs on it. However, whenever we had to hit the "stop" button to answer the phone or for other disruptions, hitting the "play" button started the whole DVD all over again. This doesn't happen with regular (non BluRay) DVDs. We sort of bagged renting BluRay DVDs. Maybe I should try again with the "pause" button, but I still can't figure out why BR DVDs start all over at the beginning. Anyone else have this problem? There really is no such thing as a Blu-ray DVD Your problem was one of my biggest nitpicks when I made the leap - it either has to do with having Java content on the disc, which somehow precludes the memory function of DVDs from working - however, discs without such content can have the "start from where I stopped" function and some do, although not as many as should. It was one of the things I insisted on on the Nudie Musical blu-ray.

My mother finally got a BD player to go with her big TV. So now I'm finally going to end up sampling a few BDs and seeing what the fuss is about. Do report back on your experiences with the format...
