Jon Pertwee was my Doctor, pure and simple. I remembered the first two. I was 4 years old when I saw the Hartnell/third ever Dalek story The Chase episode 6, my earliest memory. I was a regular viewer of Troughton, but I sat up big style the first time I saw the Radio Times cover featuring the then new Doctor. Wow! He looked like a super hero! He even has a cape!
Loved every minute of his time in the show and mourned him when Tom Baker took over. Heroic, action packed and above all he treated the subject seriously. Loved cute Jo Grant and almost cried like a baby at her leaving in The Green Death. And there's never been a supporting cast like the UNIT mob. And then there's Roger Delgado the ONLY Master.
I haven't bothered with these Titan comic books, but it looks like I'll be getting this Pertwee series. I mean, just look at the first gorgeous variant cover. The one credited to Josh Burns. Stunning! Appropriate Sonic and all.

Wonderful.
A few fellow Who fan friends and myself have a little online discussion list to which we all subscribe, folks who already get together occasionally. It was suggested last Friday that we all watch a Pertwee this coming week, and stick a review up.
So. Picking the perfect Pertwee. Much as I love the oh so serious 7th season, it's got to be from the proper UNIT family era, with Katy and Delgado, which also rules out my favourite Doctor's last season. It needs to be set on Earth, and it needs a good action sequence involving a vehicle that Perters was passionate about. There's only one that truly fits the bill here. The Pertwee gang's own firm favourite The Daemons! I'll have no problem squeezing that one in this coming week. Pure class, ticking every box of my list of Third Doctor era essentials.

I'm afraid that of all the conversations myself and my Who fan friends have had about Katy Manning, none of them have ever been about that!
Sadly some of late have been about her getting older. But I'll never forget an old meeting from a time when dvds, Blu-rays and so on were a dream. We had leaked vhs copies from the BBC, camera copies from Canada and all sorts. Anyway, we had The Time Monster. There was a great sequence at the start of episode 1. A nightmare scenario with The Master.
But what brought the house down was when Katy Manning walked across to the Doctor's science bench and sat on it crossing her legs in her mini skirt. At which point the entire room erupted in one unanimous "CCOOOOOOORRR"!

Much as I love the oh so serious 7th season, it's got to be from the proper UNIT family era, with Katy and Delgado, which also rules out my favourite Doctor's last season.
Your criteria also effectively eliminates any Pertwee serial with music by Carey Blyton. 
I'm probably the only one who actually likes to hear Blyton's music whilst watching The Silurians or Death to the Daleks.

You guys might appreciate this blog entry i wrote a few years ago:
I first started watching while a wee lad in Iowa. I must have been in fifth grade at the time and somehow started watching a few episodes of this strange and wonderful show about an eccentric fellow who fought monsters and aliens and such. I recall enjoying it and watching fairly regularly, but I really got hooked after an incident at school.
You see, there was this girl.
I'd noticed her almost immediately upon the start of classes. We'd only just moved to this part of town, so this was a whole new school and I was once again the new kid, so there was little chance that I would be able to connect with this new cute girl. Making friends with the other boys was hard enough.
I don't know now why or how it even came up. But somehow during class one day, I mentioned this show Doctor Who I'd been watching. After class, she rushed over to me.
"You watch Doctor Who?" she said.
"Yeah," I nodded.
"Isn't it great!"
This changed everything. We had something in common. I could hardly wait for the show to start each evening, hoping I could discuss new plot developments with her on the playground the next day.
Of course, I never really spoke to her again. She rejoined her socially superior group of girl friends and I slowly became acquainted with other nerds on the periphery.
Today, I don't remember her name, I don't really even remember what she looked like. But I remember that feeling, that small connection I had with her.
And that's why, so many years later, with seven other actors tackling the part of Doctor Who, Jon Pertwee remains my favorite.

SO sweet.
My first girlfriend was someone who I grew up with. Literally the girl next door. We went through all sorts together, but when Secondary School beckoned I lost her.
However, there was a time in the mid sixties (which bears out my memories of the Troughton era) when I always watched Doctor Who at her house. The Ice Warriors is one I'll never forget because her dad insisted on doing impressions of the equally deep voiced computer featured in that story.
She had a wooden place mat that her mother allowed her to use for anything else, and I drew pictures of Cybermats (you really need to be a fan to know what they are) and Cybermen on it. And of course Daleks. Years later she showed me this whilst sitting in her yard. Called me over and said "remember this?"
Happy days.

Love all those. Time Monster is full of everything I love about the Pertwees. The usual team including Delgado. And much humour it's easy to forget. I LOVE Ingrid Pitt's description of The Master "he has the bearing of a god". I love the fun with Pertwee and the tea infused gadget. But most of all I love the episode ending where Captain Yates might be about to be killed by the V1. As a kid I'd just seen a WW2 movie about attacks on London, and suddenly this cliff-hanger had real impact, and to this day still ranks for me as one of the best.
Mind of Evil has all the seriousness of Season 7, plus the 3 middle season's benefits via cast etc.
The Green Death will always be a firm favourite for being the best ever Classic Series' best companion farewell. No other came close. And when folks started saying that New Who's companions were too based in soap territory, I remember thinking that they were finally living up to that best ever companion farewell from Green Death.
BTW I do like very much both serious Season 7 and Season 11. The first is quite adult in it's straight-laced feel, something we could do with more often (in both Classic and New), while Season 11 is slightly melancholy in feel because Jo's gone, not to mention dear old Delgado in real life, and bears similarities with the first Tom Baker season.
That's not a criticism, just an observation as the new regime's presence was almost upon us with the slightly gothic feel to both Death to the Daleks and Monster of Peladon.

Paul, does your group ever discuss why Katy Manning is ALWAYS carrying her pocketbook with her throughout The Sea Devils? Drives me nuts!
Actually, I find that the thing that drives my friends nuts in The Sea Devils is Malcolm Clarke's music! Personally, apart from some flatulent notes, I find it quite unearthly (for a score for an Earthly story). Cracking story, and the one thing that tickles me every time I see it, is the scene where little Jo Grant departs the hovercraft, with the sailors lining each side of the gangplank. Cute.
Then there's The Master watching kids' s.f. show The Clangers in his cell. And of course the sword duel between him and Pertwee. Superb. Classic. Edwin Richfield also makes a great naval stand-in for the Brigadier.

Not at all. Although I find The Silurians a little unintentionally funny, like it's played on kazoos, I LOVE Death to the Daleks. Great little Dalek theme, and an extremely atmospheric chant in the Exxilons' temple. "You have defied the place of our gods"!. Got the cd Blyton released with both these and Revenge of the Cybermen, titled 'Sherlock Holmes Meets Doctor Who'. But their his own cover versions, and much of them aren't quite right as is often the case.

Jon Pertwee was the first honorary president of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. In honour of the man who played the third Doctor, the Society is raising funds for a new Heritage Plaque, which is aimed to be installed at the New Wimbledon Theatre (the theatre played host to the premiere of the stage play The Ultimate Adventure in 1989).
As part of the fund-raising, DWAS are selling badges based on the TARDIS roundels, which can be purchased in sets of seven via their website.
The actor will also be celebrated at a special one-day event held by DWAS, Polarity Day, which will take place in London on the 23rd October.
In 2014 the Society unveiled a plaque in memory of Doctor Who's first producer, Verity Lambert at the then Riverside Studios in London. Pertwee himself was also remembered in 2002 when plaques commemorating the first three Doctors were unveiled at the former BBC Television Centre.

Fans of classic WHO might be interested in watching The Terror of the Tongs (produced by Hammer Films in 1960).
Not only does Roger Delgado have scenes alongside star Christopher Lee, but actor Michael Hawkins has a bit part. [both Delgado & Hawkins were in "Frontier in Space"].
Also in the cast are Richard Leech ("The Sunmakers"), Ewen Solon ("Planet of Evil"), & Michael Peake ("The Romans").
Set in 1910 in Hong Kong, this picture is about the Red Dragon Tong - a subject which later figures into fan-favo(u)rite "The Talons of Weng Chiang".
