Any fans of his around here besides me?
I'm listening to Immersion: 3 at the moment... absolutely SUBLIME!

Great listening for late at night, which I can't indulge in because I'm working an overnight tonight. I will post the titles I have, but would be interested in any fans posting their favorites or links to reviews. I am very interested in the 'dark ambient' stuff or just ambient in general.

Hey JS!
I can't name all the Roach CDs I have, but I have Dynamic Stillness, Immersions 1, 3, and 4,
Volume 1 of Mystic Chords and Sacred Spaces, Quiet Music, Slow Heat, Structures From Silence, DreamTime Return... and many more! I DEFINITELY love his dark ambient ("Atmospheric Space) music. I not into the "techno" type stuff, but that's just me.big grin

Jim,

I have DREAMTIME RETURN and also his appearances (well, whatever) on various Hearts of Space programs, and several discs at home.

I dislike the techno stuff and prefer the slow-moving moody stuff myself and have been trying to find more of this kind of thing. I find it so enjoyable to just put it on and either watch something like 2001 with the sound off, or write, or just relax.

Certain folks who do this music just put me to sleep, but like Brian Eno with such things as Thursday Afternoon, I am intrigued by what composers can do with these slow-moving textural compositions. Not something I listen to all the time, but there's nothing else like it.

I am very fond of Structures From Silence. I often listen to it while I am writing.

I LOVE his ambient / space stuff. All 3 of the original Quiet Music cassette releases are now available on a 3 CD set, finally. Structures From Silence, Magnificent Void, all are solid.

I have Now/Traveler on CD , they're less successful but have some moments. Stormwarning I thought was going to be great but, sequencers just aren't his thing. Outside of the ambient/space CD's, his stuff hasn't grabbed me.

Yeah... Magnificent Void is terrific!
I bought Storm Warning, expecting something really cool, but was GREATLY disappointed!
I have the original release of the Quiet Music CD, but never have picked up the 3-disc set.
I'm listening to Immersion: 3 at the moment, THAT is a 3-disc set!
If you got to steveroach.com, and click on "atmospheric space", and click on the first soundclip, it will cycle through ALL of the soundclips in the section... almost an HOUR of soundclips!
I've e-mailed Steve a number of times... a very nice fellow!

Oh... I also have Now/Traveler... I honestly can't remember what it sounds like, so I guess I'm going to have to give it a spin!

JS... Eno's "ambient" series is wonderful, especially On Land, which was the last in the series.
Thursday Afternoon is fantastic, but DEFINITELY not for everyone!
Too bad Michael Stears won't return to his roots, and release another CD.... I would LOVE it if he would perform another work on the Serge!!!!
Oh... and HArold Budd's release, entitled The Pearl is ASTONISHING, especially track 5("Lost in the Humming Air")!

Jim,

Eno's SMALL CRAFT ON A MILK SEA is very good, shorter pieces ala the Eno/Budd/Lanois APOLLO or Eno's LOVELY THUNDER--"Ice Floes in Eden" is another of these very languid, moody pieces he does like no one else.

Sorry to divert from Steve Roach, but thought you or someone else who likes his work would like these, too.

I'll divert even further! I'm listening to Farts O' Space... I mean Hearts of Space... at the moment, and they're playing a sub-genre called "Glacial Ambient", and this stuff is INCREDIBLE!!!
That Eno CD you just mentioned("Milk Sea") was feature of HOS a few weeks back.... great stuff!
I also have 3 of Mychael Danna's CDs... the WONDERFUL "Summerland(With Tim Clement), "Sirens"(excellent!), and "Skies"(or is it "Skys"?). All recommended!

Jim,

I mock Hearts of Space as much as anyone, and yet I really enjoy it, especially when writing or painting. The definition of a guilty pleasure, cuz when someone walks in I want to turn on Dylan or Zeppelin or something. big grin

Jim,

After that Christmas album, nothing he could do is beyond imagining.

"Bob Dylan Sings The Mariah Carey Songbook" can't be far away.

But I digress...

Stearns was supposed to re-release the wonderful Planetary Unfolding on CD , but that's been pending for about 3 years now. I have a few of his other CD's, Encounters, M'Ocean etc; but nothing compares to that one from his catalog.

Also Kevin Brahney's The Way Home is gorgeous space music, that is on CD but missing on disc is the lovely Lullaby For The Hearts Of Space.

David Lange's Return Of The Comet is one I've always had a soft spot for, too . He released an expanded version recently

I have only one Roach album, Stream Of Thought with my countryman Erik Wøllo.

What do you mean with "his techno stuff"?

Has Michael Stearns stated that he won't release any more albums?

Well... Stearns has kept pretty busy scoring rides for the past several years. His website hasn't had an update in over 5 years! You can't even ORDER stuff off his site anymore, which makes me very sad.frown

Even though this thread IS about Steve Roach, I must say that nearly most "Space Music" releases pale in comparison to Stearns' Planetary Unfolding! An absolute Masterpiece!
I'm listening to M'Ocean at the moment, and the track "Vicki's Dance" is playing... you talk about SUBLIME!

FIRST BREATH.... You're not going to believe this... Last Friday night, I posted that I was listening to HOS, and they were playing "Glacial Ambient" music, and the first selections were ASTOUNDING... and it turns out that it was SILENT CURRENTS by ERIK WOLLO!!! I am DEFINITELY going to get that CD!!!

Yes, Wøllo has lots of good stuff through an almost 30 year-long career.

Be sure to check out his site:
