I remember years ago when it seem like all you can eat restaurants were opening everywhere in America. But in recent history it seems to be leveling itself out. Or becoming a lesser altenative when it comes to eating out. I wonder, could it be because such establishments over the years have led to the increase in obesity and diabetes as well?. Or could it be because, the so called overweight people made such establishments often to lose money?. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

In Minneapolis here it seems all Chinese restaurants have turned into all-u-can-eat buffets (or added buffets) to survive. I don't know how they can stay in business because even I over do it at these places.

Love Chinese buffets.

Love Chinese food, period.

Favorite buffets are at casinos here, or in Las Vegas, where buffets are boffo...

(Couldn't care less about gambling; only go to LV for the buffets and the used-DVD stores, of which there are -used to be- many, and with great prices.)

Here in Michigan it seems all of the Old Country Buffets closed. So much for those unlimited all you can eat places.

The best AYCE places were the Chesapeake Bay Seafood Houses which were popular on the east coast back in the 80's and 90's. They are all but extinct now. You used to be able to get AYCE Alaskan Crab Legs for $12.00. Those were the days.

There are plenty of "all you can eat" Chinese buffets. Also places like Golden Coral which I think are "all you can eat" as well.

TO GARY S -Yes there are a lot of places in this country where there used to be more ALL YOU CAN EAT.so your area is not the only place this is occurring. There still plenty around but not as prevalent as 20 years ago, but as posted already, Chinese Restaurants still will at times have it. Golden coral still is hanging in there, but I heard in some locations they have closed. Royal fork, a all you can eat chain in the Midwest has just about closed all it's restaurants, maybe all of them. New York in the 80's and 90's were opening them all over the place, many have since closed. So it depends where you live. I think the attitude for many have change over the years. Healthier eating practices have become more popular for many in this generation.

TO ADAM B- I remember that chain[Chesapeake] yeah, all gone.Good stuff.I remember back in the 70's early 80 places down the east coast[New York to Virginia] there were places where they had all you can chicken with all you can drink beer. Now that I can understand why slowly but surely many of them closed.

I remember Johnny Carson describing the all-you-can-eat special at a restaurant called Vinnie Abrutzi's Little Touch of Newark. "After about 30 minutes," Carson quipped, "Vinnie would come out and say 'That's-a all you can eat!'"

I read recently that you have to go back for a third full plate of all-you-can-eat before a restaurant is in danger of losing money on you. And most people can't put away that much.

Also, there's always a danger in having too much of any one food, in case there's something wrong with it. And this goes double for shrimp, crab, things like that. Where a small serving of a food gone bad might lead to a stomach ache, gorging on it could kill you.

All-you-can-eat sushi is where it's at.

I'm with ya! Sadly, where I am there's only one sushi buffet within an hour's drive and it's good but mostly rolls; only a little nigiri, no sashimi. And customers line up, so you have to load up when they put out some fresh stuff. We had a great one years ago for $20 a pop, all you can eat. They tended to watch you like a hawk when you made repeated trips to the buffet bar. They moved it to a bigger city I think.

Does anyone remember a place called BONANZA-ALL YOU CAN EAT?

We had Bonanza Steakhouses back in the 70s' , but the chain in this area was not buffet style.

I do enjoy a Chinese buffet, and the more homestyle Golden Corral. Especially for breakfasts

This used to be my favorite all you can eat place but at 88 bucks a head, it's just too steep.

My favorite 'all you can eat' places in San Diego were the soup/salad/muffin joints... looks like The Soup Plantation is still open. I never walked out of there without being absurdly stuffed! smile

side note : one of my favorite South Park episodes is Grey Dawn, when they defeat the senior's revolution by shutting down Country Kitchen Buffet.

You are right -- they are not like they used to be - thankfully. I remember a few times at the Golden Corral and Old Country buffets where I was truly disgusted with the atmosphere, sanitary conditions, food quality, etc. so I more or less stopped going to them. GC is still nearby but the local Old Countrys have shuttered - there's one 50 miles from me.

What is new and welcome is Sweet Tomato - still all you can eat but most of what they serve is much healthier choices and much better prepared than the above mentioned buffets -- a great, extensive salad bar, numerous homemade soups , fresh cooked pasta and breads, etc.

I've dined at almost all of the Atlantic City casino buffet restaurants (not the Revel) and the two best ones are The Borgata Buffet and the Taj Mahal Sultan's Feast. You pay your $25-$30 and you can gorge yourself on their steaks and Italian dishes. The Borgata's atmosphere is a little more pleasing to the eye, but the Taj has great meat dishes. Try them if you go there.

What I really like about ALL YOU CAN EAT is no matter how you look at it you can't really be ripped off Unlike many restaurants that offer little for the price they charge. Paying for refills of drinks, paying for little extra's, I mean most sit Down restaurants are ripped off joints.SO ALL YOU CAN EAT is refreshing.Nobody tells no one to over do it, just eat till your heart or stomach's content.I would love to see a world where all food establishments are ALL YOU CAN EAT.Can you just picture MCDONALD'S with the teenagers on a Saturday night.[ha-ha]
