I mention this because I stumbled upon a "Superheroes"-themed film music album released by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra's own label, "Fanfare Cincinnati", and many people (including myself) may have been totally oblivious about its existence otherwise:

In between the "standards", there are a few surprises, like Leon Klatzkin's "To the Rescue" or Pete Anthony's "The Launch". And the suites seem to have been compiled especially for this release.

Amazing!! Love these orchestra only arrangements! They bring a depth and life to some of the themes, especially Thor and the Dark Knight, that I have never tought could be possible!

this is really a great and should find much more discussion and resonance here, so that this tradition will return much more, those rerecordings.
Since Williams and Kunzel stopped doing it many years ago, no one covered all those great music of the last decade, except for some City of Prague Philharmonic and London Music Works (some of which appear to be actually mock-ups) recordings.
Even if it could be more enthusiastic, the string articulations in The Avengers just sound not accented and heavy enough, a bit too lame, and the brass playing in general could be much bolder.
The line notes are ... well, not really well informed. The Dark Knight composed by James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer is not mentioned? And X-Men III by John Ottman?
Anyway, hopefully, we will have a lot more of these rerecordings please. So, guys, get this, embrace it and discuss it.

I haven't purchased the album download (yet), only listened to the samples. Is the actual lossless sound quality really as dry and "forward" as indicated by the samples? Because that would be the polar opposite of Erich Kunzel's (excessively) reverberant Telarc albums.

Just picked up my copy. Perhaps the recording quality isn't quite up there with Star Tracks II (what other CD is!?), it's nevertheless an excellent listen and continues Erich Kunzel's tradition of mixing standards with far more unusual material. Also includes a few guilty pleasures - Wonder Woman anyone?
Certainly I agree with a previous poster that the brass could be a bit more punchy occasionally, but it's pretty darn good and a step up from a few of the latter Kunzel recordings.
