I watched this on Netflix, so here goes. I watched, first as a hetero male who was curious about the hot sex scenes, this is true, I'll admit. No disappointment there. However, I also love foreign films and was curious about the hubbub. Pleasantly surprised that its an excellent film, and I would echo what JohnnyG said - Adele is a joy to watch, terrific performance, her face is so expressive, she says it all without much dialogue and while the 3hr. run time is off putting, I also would or could not cut anything. I also had no boredom just watching the two leads terrific, subtle performances. I had forgotten reading the director controversy, and glad I did, since it would have tainted the film for me. A shame, but I guess the end product may be better for it.... The subs - they are there, but as sometimes happens with Netflix, there are technical delays. They worked fine in one room of the house, but had the dreaded-occasional lag/out of sync problem in another room.

Apparently the actresses are not happy with the sex scene. Though they obviously agreed to do the film. They didn't expect the scene to go on for so long or be as graphic as it was. They appear to be embarrassed over the whole thing. Now vilifying the director. What a sad state of affairs for all involved. ___________________________________________________ Seydoux: "He warned us that we had to trust him—blind trust—and give a lot of ourselves. He was making a movie about passion, so he wanted to have sex scenes, but without choreography—more like special sex scenes. He told us he didn’t want to hide the character’s sexuality because it’s an important part of every relationship. But once we were on the shoot, I realized that he really wanted us to give him everything. Most people don’t even dare to ask the things that he did, and they’re more respectful—you get reassured during sex scenes, and they’re choreographed, which desexualizes the act." "Any emotional scenes. [Kechiche] was always searching, because he didn’t really know what he wanted. We spent weeks shooting scenes. Even crossing the street was difficult. In the first scene where we cross paths and it’s love at first sight, it’s only about thirty seconds long, but we spent the whole day shooting it—over 100 takes. By the end of it, I remember I was dizzy and couldn’t even sit. And by the end of it, [Kechiche] burst into a rage because after 100 takes I walked by Adele and laughed a little bit, because we had been walking by each other doing this stare-down scene all day. It was so, so funny. And [Kechiche] became so crazy that he picked up the little monitor he was viewing it through and threw it into the street, screaming, 'I can’t work under these conditions!'" "It was horrible". Translation: What I really wanna do is direct. Translation: You don't know what the hell you're talking about. I've worked with many directors, and no one in the business these days thinks this kind of behaviour from a director is acceptable. And if an actor/director the stature of someone like Clint Eastwood, or the wunderkind Joss Whedon, can routinely establish a calm, collaborative, creative set atmosphere, then this douchebag should have done the same - especially when asking his actors to do far more risqué things in his production. This means they'd need to rely on his trust even more, so betraying that not only makes him a selfish human being out to get what he wants no matter the damage, but a moron for doing things that could go against achieving what he wants. But then I'm not an actor who believes the ends necessarily justify the means.

Well I kept an open mind and watched the whole film. It's a typically average "foreign" film with all its trappings as a "Hollywood" summer blockbuster is a typically average American film. The conflict that arises two thirds into the film was uninspired pointless melodrama. The two main actresses had a lot of chemistry together, but there is a lot more I didn't like, than what I did. I would probably bore ppl with a long review so I will leave it at that. If you want to see a far superior film watch "Show Me Love". It's original title is not too pc, but I am sure you can find it. Oh, well. It wasn't my favourite of the year either (unlike my colleagues, who hailed it as a masterpiece), but it clocked in at no. 11 of my Top 20 list of 2013, so I found it damn good. Not so much because of the story, really, but because of the wallowing in characters -- it's more of a portrait movie, really.
