That is excellent news, thanks for sharing (and I shall have to try out your podcast!). I love Serenada Schizophrana and Rabbit & Rogue so another concert work would be terrific. Here's hoping his promised violin concerto sees the light of day soon too...

Smaug is kind of ignoring Elfman's long history as a singer/songwriter with Oingo Boingo etc. May not be "concert" works except of course rock concerts are concerts. For musicians, such distinctions are arbitrary at best, as are genres these days. It's producing music that counts, and he's been doing it for what, 40 years? A piano quartet is chamber music, so I'm confused by this. Is it a piano quartet to be played by members of the Berlin Phil or something with orchestra?

My guess is that the commission comes from or on behalf of the "Berlin Philharmonic Piano Quartet". Here's a bit of their blurb: "The Berlin Philharmonic Piano Quartet is one of the few existing ensembles of this instrumentation, in contrast to the better represented form, the String Quartet. This ensemble has existed as a Berlin Philharmonic chamber music ensemble since 1985...." And here's their mention on the Berlin Phil's website: https://www.berliner-philharmoniker.de/en/ensembles/group/berliner-philharmonisches-klavierquartett/ The Berlin Phil has a lot of associated chamber groups, from the 12 Cellists to the Athenäum-Quartet.

Yes, think of it as orchestra musicians with a second gig as a chamber group. Piano quartets are not as common as the main chamber ensemble of this type, the string quartet. And there is not as much music written for them, but there are famous quartets by lots of composers - Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, etc. Even some composers with film score credits wrote piano quartets: Copland and Alfred Schnittke to name two.

Great interview, thanks for sharing. I hope he does manage a concert piece a year as he hopes and that they all get a release!
