Earlier this decade I was contacted by a scholar, Jessica Getman, writing a dissertation about the music to Star Trek: The Original Series.

I forgot about it but recently remembered, and found it online—it's terrific!

Enjoy!

I gave this a brief glance, and I suspect there is a lot of great material in there, however this is basically applying a far-left ideological lense to the subject matter: " it nevertheless reinforced the dominant
position of the white, heterosexual male in the United States’ social hierarchy."

To conflate basic classical liberal values with something uniquely "white", "heterosexual" and/or "male" before even getting beyond the introduction speaks volumes.

The " the white, heteronormative, male, American hero." description of Kirk is also telling regarding the focus.

And when I read " power theory, race and post-colonial theory, feminist and
queer theory," as methodologies, I don't see anything that is valid beyond the intersectional dogmatic lens.

With all due respect, I'll interpret Star Trek and it's music through the Classical Liberal lens, and not through an inherently bigoted, identitarian one.

Ugh! Anything about the music therein?

They're doing their level best to wreck the arts as they have academia.

Guys.
This is standard academese. Sadly.
That's why I dislike it it so, and enjoy teasing Thor about it ..No one reads this stuff. It ain't gonna change the world.

Dude, some of us do.
And it ain't meant to change the world.
It's a dissertation, not religious doctrine. big grin

Kudos!

I have a feeling that I'll find a decent amount of enjoyment out of this (because you have to be a certain level of nerd to write this much about 1960's TV music). But I also feel I'll be reading an awful lot that makes me pull my hair out.

For starters, the myth that Majel Barrett was removed because audiences couldn't handle a woman as second in command and not because the suits didn't want Roddenberry casting his mistress.

You read that crap?
wink

I'd rather listen to Lenny Rosenman than try to read an academic treatise on film music!

I've just gone through it and it was.
It was a really good read (and very cool that she gives a shout-out to your Trek-work, Jeff).
I liked best the section devoted to Spock and his musical representation.

I do not agree with absolutely every conclusion Getman came to but, damn!, she did her homework.
Very thorough!
And what a pleasure to read something by someone that understands proper writing form.

Thank you Lukas, for bringing it here.

Now, how's this for a coincidence:
I had a Cluster album on the hi-fi, "Grosses Wasser".
I was in the middle of the Spock chapters and there is a section (at about the 10:20 point) of the title track of the album that echoes the melody of Courage's theme.
My jaw dropped a wee bit and I laughed out loud.

Are you sure it's not just the voices in your head trying to get you to review your grammar and punctuation before you hit the "post" button?
