Disney's latest film gets a soundtrack release on November 16. The film is a retelling of the Rapunzel story and actually looks pretty decent. Something the trailer conveniently misses out is that the film is a musical hearkening back to 1990s Disney and the attempt to reboot the fairytale genre with The Princess and the Frog last year. Alan Menken's score and songs (with lyrics by Glenn Slater) are being released on a physical disc, which is not surprising and follows Disney's new business model for soundtracks. Despite my cynicism, this is one to look forward to.

A physical disc and not a bleeping download? This is promising.

Yes, it is already listed on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0042KZJZU/ref=s9_simh_gw_p15_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=13DYCFXRBFWBGJ58W22J&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846

It bugs me because Disney are playing fast and loose with the titles they select for physical soundtrack releases. I will cherish a copy of the Tangled CD, I'm sure, but I also would have cherished CDs for Up, Toy Story 3 and A Christmas Carol.

As another poster wrote in a similar thread, it has to do with songs. If the film is a musical, like THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG and TANGLED, it will have a CD.

Yeah, which says that Prince of Persia got a CD release because of the Alanis Morissette song. I'd have thought Disney could market Toy Story 3 for the new Randy Newman song as being "by the songwriter of The Princess and the Frog". At any rate, I'm not too bothered, at least Tangled gets a CD release.

Yes, because the music from that film was such a big hit. Oh wait, no it wasn't...

Up did have a song, but the period-toned "The Spirit Of Adventure" (in addition to not turning up until towards the end of the end credits) is less promotable and customer-friendly than Alanis Morissette.

Looking forward to hearing Menken's score -- even if it's supposed to have some pop song Menken had nothing to do with over the end credits (at least that's what Deadline Hollywood reported...it said Menken was none too happy about it as well).

Only reason I'm seeing this film is because of Menken. If I was at Disney, I would use him exactly the say way Ashman used him; showcase his music over some stupid pop song.

"DISNEY BASTARDS KILLED MY CD'S"

It seems like Disney only shies away from CD releases for the Pixar films, which really stinks because all Pixar films have had great music. I am hoping Cars 2 gets a CD release because if they stick more songs on it like the original Cars, there is more of a CD appeal. But if it is mostly Giacchino's score, I am not hoping for much.

Stupid Disney!

I quite like the song "I See The Light."

If the score is in the same vein of this song, then I'm quite excited.

The preview doesn't even mention songs; tries to look like SHREK, at least in style.

THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG was not the success the Disney people had hoped for, in neither the film nor the music. Their excuse for this was the word, "PRINCESS," in the title, which they say did not draw that key audience, males between 14-20. However, on the critical front, the general consensus about PRINCESS AND THE FROG was that Newman's music, and songs, where simply unmemorable....

I agree with this.

I have higher hopes for TANGLED, which, you may notice, has had a title change from its original concept, which was RAPUNZEL. Notice the new choice of not promoting a female element in the title.

Usually, I'll buy anything Menken brings out. But he does have a weakness for gospel songs. The score he wrote for the new stage musical, LEAP OF FAITH, which played in L.A., was full of them, none of which was particularly memorable, except the title song. (And who here remembers Menken's score for HOME ON THE RANGE?)

Still, I'll take an Alan Menken any day over a Randy Newman....

(Although Newman, to his credit, has written some notable film scores, such as PLEASANTVILLE, THE NATURAL, and RAGTIME. I've just never much liked his songs.)

I don't blame Newman for Princess and the Frog. If I was a composer myself, I could hardly get inspired by that picture. The work they did on the storyline and character development wasn't at all polished I thought.

Newman must consider a lyricist for such projects though, especially if Disney decides to give him another chance with the Pixar fairytale flick, Brave.

I really like this soundtrack - a return to form for Menken, with Donna Murphy's "Mother Knows Best" being a standout song.

I've just been listening to this soundtrack this morning. Usually Menken's songs are the highlights of his recordings but this time the songs, though pleasant, strike me as being rather bland. There are no real showstoppers on this one.

The underscore, however, is another matter. The background score outshines the songs by far (imho) and is one of Menken's best efforts! The score showcases the adventure with humor, suspense, and action with a variety of style and color that probably should have gone into the songs.

Perhaps Disney was right to downplay the existence of the songs in their previews because none of them would help to sell this film.

Oh, and the last song by Grace Potter is completely out of place and does not belong here. They should have saved it for the "songs inspired by" album.
