I really like this soundtrack - a return to form for Menken, with Donna Murphy's "Mother Knows Best" being a standout song.

Return to form from what? When did he deviate from his form?

I have actually enjoyed Tangled more than I thought when I listened to the samples. The songs are not as immediately accessible as prior efforts, but I am appreciating them more with repeated listens. The score is well done and as mentioned Menken gets into a variety of genres from action to an Irish sounding jig.

Can this soundtrack be arranged chronologically?

Can this soundtrack be arranged chronologically?

Yes, of course it can. Just shuffle a few tracks around in the playlist and voila! razz

A lot of people seem to think Hercules was the pit-stop of Menken's animated musical genius. I, however, quite like Hercules, along with Enchanted and now Tangled.

I saw the movie with my kids. Wasn't great but I liked a lot of the humor. Musically, I liked the "I've got a Dream" song the best. Lots of energy and wit, particularly in the context of the movie. The underscore was good but there were a lot of orchestral swells and swoons that felt kind of generic to me and sometimes out of proportion to what was happening on screen. Skill, Menken is obviously good at this kind of project and I can see he's still the go-to guy for Disney musicals.

Can this soundtrack be arranged chronologically?

10,1,3,2 (Cut from the film, I believe, glad they left it on here), 9,4,11,5,12,8,13,6,14,15,7,16,17,18,19,20

While a little goofy chronologically, this album is leaps and bounds better than The Princess and the Frog soundtrack which had short cues combined with totally unrelated longer ones including a song reprise slapped in the middle of random underscore! These tracks are individual cues and seem to be unedited (except for the prologue, which is condensed). My only gripe after figuring out the arrangement is realizing that some great stuff was left off of here, including some really fun comedy score from when Rapunzel is interrogating Flynn and the fantastic Menken action music from the river dam sequence and the following suspense music in the cave! I'm really sad that stuff isn't on here. And I have to say that, while I loved the movie, I initially felt the songs were a little soft and not as memorable as ones past, but after listening to the cd a few times, they're really clicking with me, so I definitely see these as becoming classics for the kids who grow up watching this movie a hundred scant times.

Thank you! Good to read it's not another Princess and the frog.

I just saw "Tangled" today, and I think it's one of Menken's best scoring efforts. The songs are a little routine, but the film is not overpopulated with them, and Menken's background score ably carries the film over the gaps. One thing that really struck me was what a wonderful voice Mandy Moore has--not so much her singing voice, but her speaking voice. It just seemed perfect for the character. Give props to someone at Disney for very astute voice casting.

I completely agree with you! her voice really is strikingly pretty, and matches the character perfectly

I think I spotted something in "Realization and Escape" around 1:29-1:32 which might suggest that a portion of this track was taken out. Not that I mind or something, but I was surprised by this one; usually Menken doesn't leave traces of edits on his tracks like this one.

Though I don't think it's on the same level as his earlier masterpieces, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and THE LITTLE MERMAID, nevertheless I enjoyed TANGLED as a film and score very much.

And I've been playing the big song, "I See the Light," over and over again since then; so I must like it.

I'd suspected this effort might stylistically be an attempt to capture the SHREK crowd, but it doesn't have any of the contemporary references so rife in the SHREK movies, all of which will date badly.

Instead, TANGLED creates its own classic, fairytale atmosphere, and it works beautifully.

And the sequence of the lanterns is pure animated enchantment!

Definitely recommended.

BTW: See it in 3D; they really know how to use the depth dimension in this one...

I picked up this CD a while ago in my local HMV for under a tenner and after playing it a few times, kinda shelved it cos it never grabbed me like his other musical scores did.
I went to see the film today, as an antidote to last nights viewing of 127 HOURS and had a good time.
It was a pleasant new take on the old Rapunzel tale and the computer animation was gorgeous.
I also came away with a new appreciation of the music and songs.
I've rejigged them into film order and the whole thing plays much better for me now.
I don't love it as much as ENCHANTED, which I still play often, but it's pretty solid, tuneful scoring in this age of drone and sustain.

Think I have all of Alan Menken's stuff. This one included. I liked it ok. The songs aren't terribly memorable but Mandy Moore's voice is nice (her body and that bad either).
Menken is one these guys I wish would do something different. Maybe he's married to Disney (contractually) I don't know. I have his music he wrote for Lincoln documentary and its good.

Wow!

I wasn't expecting much from this soundtrack, but both the score and songs blew me away. Well, the score moreso than the songs, but it definitely sounds as though Alan Menken still has the magic touch!

This album has PLENTY of score as well - 32 minutes, compared to 23 minutes for the songs. It's half and half, and it makes a great listening experience.

The score is big, powerful, thematic. I'm not normally into musical numbers, but I could get through the songs... I even enjoyed some of them, especially "I've Got a Dream".

If you get a chance, check out this soundtrack. It's a must-have now, IMO.

It's not bad, and certainly better than most of his 2000's output, but it's not quite back to his 90's form.

I was fortunate enough to snap up one of these. Any idea how many were produced?

Finally caught up with this one on Disney Plüs today.
Only ever saw bits and pieces back in theaters as I was too busy being a projectionist.
Boy this is a treasure. Somewhat under appreciated I think. One of Disney's strongest in a pretty strong decade of Ralph, Frozen and others.
I've Got a Dream is instantly in my top 3 Disney 2010s songs easy.
