Having seen the film and said interview, neither of you know that the Hell you're talking about.

James

How can you reach that conclusion? I don't know about the other wanker, nor do I know for a fact that you've actually seen the film except for you saying as much. However, you have no fucking idea if I've actually seen it or not.

I'd like to advise you, without your consent, to fuck all the way off.

I'm not hiding anything in my post. I don't care if people see me swearing and I also don't think, as per usual, you know what the Hell you're talking about.

James

Expertly argued son. A veritable scholar (and a gentleman) you are. Your manners could use a bit of a polish though. big grin

P.S. You're still effing wrong though.

Bond1965 has further tenure, insider knowledge and intestinal fortitude than 95% of this group.

When he posts....I and others, know it's with purpose and 'right on'.

I also know he would not breach Mos Eisley, unless he felt the need to squash stupidity.

So kudos J & FU A&C for your idiotic fallacy...

Being an out-of-date old fanny, I hadn't bothered to keep up with the times and read up on THE FABELMANS film or score. I still know virtually nothing about it, but I did listen to that YT track.

It was quite difficult at first to avoid thoughts coming into my head in the form of silent words such as, "Oh, that's typical John Williams. Oh, he did that before in so many other scores. Oh, there he's doing a classical pastiche again. Oh, there he's trying out his "whimsical" side. Oh, how I wish it sounded more like Planet of the Apes" - and you can add nausea if you like.

Then after about one minute of those thoughts and words getting in the way while I should have been just listening to the music, I made my mind go kind of blank and just reacted to the music, and it really was quite wonderful.

I rarely have those moments nowadays. Cynical thoughts and "funny comments I must remember for FSM" keep clouding my listening, listening in a pure way, like a child.

"There are not many persons who know what wonders are opened to them in the stories and visions of their youth; for when as children we listen and dream, we think but half-formed thoughts, and when as men we try to remember, we are dulled and prosaic with the poison of life. But some of us awake in the night with strange phantasms of enchanted hills and gardens, of fountains that sing in the sun, of golden cliffs overhanging murmuring seas, of plains that stretch down to sleeping cities of bronze and stone, and of shadowy companies of heroes that ride caparisoned white horses along the edges of thick forests; and then we know that we have looked back through the ivory gates into that world of wonder which was ours before we were wise and unhappy."

Well done Kev - You win a blow-up doll of Cthulhu. It was indeed High-Powered Hovercraft, from his story "Celephais", written way back in 1920 when we was kids.

"I’m 75 years old. I know what it’s like to possess something that I adored. I know what it’s like to possess the LP of [the score for] 'Lawrence of Arabia' and then years later to have the actual DVD of it. I treasure that."

    James

  • SPECULATIVE SPOILER...
  • The final product may tell.

    I covered my assumptions with these statements. I never stated anything as fact. However, the TV interview in question did have Spielberg openly admit to him blaming his father for his mother's affair, which is what led to my hypothesis. As stated before, I'll have to see his interpretation for myself when the film is actually released.

  • I don't know about the other wanker

    I prefer the term "jamoke" or "ragamuffin".

    So much to unpack here... although i hate that lazy and rather deflationary expression. My apologies.

    You've made several unsubstantiated statements:

    1) "Tenure";
    2) "Insider knowledge";
    3) "Intestinal fortitude";
    4) You and others "know";

    I could go on, but first, do you care to offer any kind of facts or evidence to back up these rather wild, perhaps even hysterical claims? Fallacies, you say?

    Also, you had to put in a lame Star Wars reference, thus confirming at least one thing about you.

    In any case, a bit of civility still goes a long way.

    Good day, Sir.

    P.S. Congrats on the passive-agressive way you tarred as you said, "95% of this group".

    Duly noted, Sir. "Wanker" is merely a generic, and quite useful, shorthand. big grin

    Ragamuffin it is.

    The narrative around Spielberg's parents and their divorce has changed a few times, and the film THE FABELMANS involves a MAJOR reset of it, so I'll try to lay out the progression of how the story has evolved. I know I was confused by it after seeing the film, until I read some of the recent interviews Spielberg has given.

    Originally, the narrative was simply that Spielberg's parents divorced when he was 19. He spoke in interviews of how he blamed his father for the divorce. Clearly, he was much closer to his mother, and more distant from his father, for many years. This was reflected in many of his films, especially E.T.. He spoke about getting closer to his father again, at the urging of his wife, in interviews around the time he made SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, in 1998.

    In 2012, in an interview promoting LINCOLN, the story got its first major revision, when Spielberg's parents, who had become friends again, did a joint interview. In that interview, they admitted for the first time publicly that the divorce had not simply been caused by Spielberg's father deciding to divorce his mother, but by his mother falling in love with his father's best friend. In the 2012 interview, posted below, Spielberg's father speaks of his son not knowing about this at age 19, and not being told until many years after.

    Only now, in THE FABELMANS, and in interviews surrounding it, has Spielberg revealed another major element of the story. At the age of 16, as dramatized in THE FABELMANS, Spielberg discovered his mother's affair with his father's best friend in family footage he had filmed. He revealed this to her, but told her he would keep it secret from his father. The way he speaks about it in the interview below, it sounds like he never told his father, who died in 2020, while he and Tony Kushner were writing the script. He also talks about this in the recent NYTimes article.

    This 2022 interview with Spielberg plays the 2012 interview with his parents at 6:25 and then has him commenting on the newer revelations after they speak.

    WARNING, THIS VIDEO CONTAINS THE SPOILER THAT I BLACKED OUT ABOVE

    Hope that clarifies everything a bit.

    Thank you James(Luckard) for taking the time to make clear what the situation was.

    I was trying to avoid talking about this specifically because most people haven't seen the film yet and the wild speculation about the situation was ridiculous, especially after the CBS segment makes it clear what happened.

    I've listened to the album twice now, but haven't seen the film. I can't wait to see the film and keep listening to the album. I hope there will be a vinyl release because it is such a lovely score and very listenable.

    It’s really a wonderful score, one of my favorite main themes in Williams‘ abundance of marvelous catalogue.

    Never mind vinyl. The 24-bit 96kHz release is sublime (and no clicks for maximum "lovely" and "listenable") - and it lets you skip the classical bits if you want to.

    Well, I don't really have any issues with clicks or whatever when it is new vinyl. And I take very good care to clean and protect my records as well. I'm not at all concerned about whatever your mentioning here as it seems to be an issue with old vinyl that is not cared for.

    And I don't plan to skip a minute of this album because it is a coherent listening experience all the way through.

    I will never understand this vinyl stuff - the score was recorded DIGITALLY. Vinyl has no point in this.

    This cue is really beautiful. Hopefully the score will garner John Williams with yet another well deserved Academy Award. The whole tone of the score is superb. Looking forward to seeing and hearing how it works within the movie.

    The tone and gentleness in a way reminds me of some of Williams' music from WAR HORSE.
