Back in the days of the FSM label, the series music would have had three volumes: see the case The Man from U.N.C.L.E. as a reference. But that's another era.

Yes, but U.N.C.L.E. was only 6 discs total over 3 volumes, including a disc of Girl From and the Goldsmith re-recordings for the 4th season. so this WWWest 4 disc set is closer than it may seem to the scale of the U.N.C.L.E. releases. (And yes, I know there's the movie disc too, but given how much material is repeated from the three sets, that's more like a highlights disc plus.)

If this set is all we ever get from WWW, I will still be well satisfied. Had almost given up hope on this music ever getting released.

Good points all, but I'm not giving up hope yet that we will see at least one more volume if not more from WWW, and until M.V. or Matt weighs in on this (if they do), I will keep holding out hope.

Bleak Island also has some interesting music near the end I don't recognize from the rest of the series. Mainly during the fight with the hooded thugs in the greenhouse and the Hound of the Baskervilles-type sequence at the end. Does anyone know where that music was tracked in from?

Does any of the discs include the score for the episode that Sammy Davis Jr appeared in that was scored by his erstwhile bandleader (and C.B.S. West Coast Music Director) Morton Stevens?

That would be Season Two's "The Night of the Returning Dead". Sadly no music is represented. The episode credits list Morton Stevens & Harry Geller. So I'm assuming it was tracked from existing scores.

THE NIGHT OF THE RETURNING DEAD was not a tracked score.

Morton Stevens contributed a partial score and Harry Geller contributed a partial as well. Also, Geller was a good friend of Mort Stevens.

In the case of THE NIGHT OF THE VIPERS, which is credited to Stevens, most of the music heard in this episode was tracked from the Emmy nominated Stevens score from the GUNSMOKE episode, MAJOR GLORY (1967). However, Stevens did contribute a few extra cues to VIPERS to round out the score, so if these elements can be found, such as a reel or stem, there could be some Stevens material added to a second volume of WWW - I'm hoping it can happen, but in the meantime, I know I will be enjoying the truly fantastic set that we do have now:-)

You won't happen to know if "The Night of the Bleak Island" had tracked music in it? But even if it did I guess it's unreleased anyway as I don't recall any releases for Gunsmoke, etc.

There was a short release of "Gunsmoke" episode scores a number of years ago from Film Music Society:

http://www.soundtrackcollector.com/title/16857/Gunsmoke

It's unlikely it contains what you want.

"The Night of the Vipers" not only features stock music from GUNSMOKE's "Major Glory" but also from season 3 scores:

Pleis' "The Night of the Circus of Death"
Markowitz's "The Night of the Jack O'Diamonds"
Shores' "The Night of the Firebrand"
Scharf's "The Night of the Assassin"

"The Night of the Bleak Island" also had a bit of Morton Stevens' score for (I presume) the pilot of Hawaii Five-O (during the bit towards when Jim's fighting a bunch of the villain's underlings).

Some of Mort's Pilot music for FIVE-O was also used in THE NIGHT OF THE PLAGUE, when Artie was preparing a note for the villains toward the end of the episode:-)

You can recognize cues from Richard Shores' "The Night of the Kraken" in the first season of Hawaii Five-O.

Yep, two FIVE-O episodes that use Shores' KRAKEN music are FACE OF THE DRAGON and THE BIG KAHUNA...:-)

I posted this on a thread related to July LLL releases; it was suggested that I post on a thread devoted to WWW. Glad to see this thread. Here was my original:

Don't get me wrong ... I love the new WWW CD set ... but I have a question. One cue I was hoping the set would include is embedded in an article on Markowitz and WWW music from this site:

http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/daily/article.cfm/articleID/6325/

So I was pleased to see a section of Night of Jack O'Diamond cues on CD-4... but am I wrong that the cue on track 3 of CD 4 ... Jack O'Diamonds / To Catch a Horsethief ... is not the same cue as in the Film Score post for which I provided the link...? They sound similar ... but not quite the same; thus, the one on the Film Score post seems to be missing from the cues selected ...? It was such an iconic cue from throughout the series and one I hoped I would hear.

Again, though, fantastic set. Love the Shores cues.

You mean the new arrangement of the James West theme with a late 1960's rock music and spaghetti western rendition when James West climbs down the mountain helped with his portable devise to reach the camp of bandit El Sordo.
It's not part of Disc 4 of the set.

Yes, that is precisely what I meant ... it has horns that play a part in that cue as well. I am so sorry to confirm it's not part of the CD set ... that cue was pivotal to a lot of scenes and employed various motifs. Maybe on another set?? There is a piece that is similar on CD 4 but not the same, nor does it have the set-up cue that precedes the score on the link I copied. Thanks for info.

“Major Glory” (1967) from Gunsmoke composed by Morton Stevens
Music scenes description: some cues were tracked in two season 3 Wild Wild West episodes
(“The Night of the Montezuma’s Hordes” and, above all, “The Night of the Vipers”).

prologue
two blue soldiers head back to their camp after being brutally lectured by their sergeant
act 1
the sergeant hits Festus in the saloon of Dodge City
act 2
the same two blue soldiers stab their sergeant and steal his money in a back alley
act 3
the cavalry comes to town and the major inspects the body of the injured sergeant at the doctor’s office;
the major leaves the doctor’s office;
Festus rides to the camp of the major
act 4
the doctor examines the body of the sergeant when the cavalry comes back to town along with Matt Dillon and Festus;
the same two blue soldiers head to the livery stable and prepare horses to run away;
a showdown between the two blue soldiers and Matt Dillon and the major occur in the livery stable

MAJOR GLORY is a great, Emmy nominated score by Mort and I would LOVE to have at the very least some of this music on some kind of CD release, or perhaps on a future WWW volume...:-)

I also like to get that particular score.
We must head to Freedom and meet book-keeper Mr Moriarty and negotiate with the Vipers. wink

Uh-oh.... just realised that Robert Prince is not on the set and, as others have noted, Jack Pleis and Harry Geller are under represented. I mean, really??? Along with Shores, they're the three most interesting composers for god's sake!

Prince's stuff in particular is wonderfully quirky, dark and strange. Absent. WTF? Am I the only guy around here with ears? big grin

It's like if someone were to release a Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea set and NOT include any Leith Stevens, Courage or Goldsmith. It's at THAT level.

I'm laughing. It's hilarious... this sort of thing happens EVERY TIME with soundtracks. big grin Jeez, I dunno.......

Drasnin and Markowitz are ok, but kinda utilitarian, you know...... but they get the space here? Oy.

Sorry, I know I'm probably coming over as an ingrate asshole, but this kind of thing is soooo fuxxing exasperating.

Well look, I'll probably get this, but I am now VERY keenly looking forward to volume 2.

As a reminder: “The notes by Jon Burlingame mentioned the CBS music library at UCLA is mislabeled and incomplete. So these may represent the best of what was available.”

Dude, whatever your gripes with what wasn't included, if we don't all buy the first volume, there ain't gonna BE a second one.

Plus, it's a helluva set as is - and not just the Richard Shores music, which is what I've been wanting most of all. Sounds great, lots of variety, and plenty to love.
