is it good?
I'm not kidding, 'cause I never saw that film and heard that music at all...

The movie's flawed but very underrated, even the ending with David being the last being alive on Earth and visited by aliens.

....even the ending with David being the last being alive on Earth and visited by aliens.

....um...they weren't aliens.....they were mecha built by mecha built by mecha built by mecha built by mecha etc etc etc..........unless you were joking - I know a lot of people seemed to think the way you posted at the time....but no.

The ending is unfortunately often misunderstood. They are not aliens at the end, they are robots. They have evolved a new society on their own for 2000 years after mankind has gone extinct, they have inherited the world from us, and are now searching for a link to their makers, who they have never known, through David.

It's my favorite Williams score from the past 15 years at least, maybe from the last 20 years.

The film is a near-masterpiece, no doubt about it!
This and "Munich" are my favorite Spielberg films of the new millennium.

This set is one of the most shining jewels in LLL's crown!

Yeah... the movie is a masterpiece... the score almost as well and it is one of the last decent JW's scores.

This release was rebuilt from the ground up with Mr Williams's full support. 1941, Hook, and Empire of the Sun paved the way for this great release and for future Williams/Spielberg projects yet to come.

It's no secret of my non-interest in mostly anything post 1990, save for the odd thing here and there. And that's especially true for the 2000s. And yet - this score is one of Mr. Williams' greatest and I'm a huge fan of the film. Funnily, a lot of people who deride the film haven't actually seen it, or, if they have, saw it once when it came out. I thought it was a wonderful film when I saw it in advance of its release, but felt it just missed greatness. But each time I revisit it it grows and grows in my estimation. I predicted as with many films that there would be a turnaround on this one, and I believe that's happened pretty much. There will always be people who hate it based on their first viewing or because they think Stanley could have done it better.

The score should have won the Oscar. And this release is a must-have for any serious soundtrack fan.

I've said since the day it came out to anyone who would listen that it was Spielberg's VERTIGO, dismissed on release, but destined to be perhaps his defining masterpiece in decades to come. It's almost a catalog of every theme and element he has ever explored. And yes, Williams was robbed of recognition for his colossal achievement here. smile

So, where is this reevaluation we keep hearing about?
If you think it is a masterpiece, fine, but the general consensus of fans and critics hasn't reallu changed. ANd, it most certainly never will.

Two fans does not constitute a "masterpiece'

DOes anyone seriously rate this film in the same class as E.T.?
C'mon.........
brm

ps this FILM has been discussed in many other threads. can we limit our discussion here to the LLL release and the music?
can we/huh?

I think Tintin is fantastic so I'm shocked the find out you don't even think it's decent...I think all of the Williams scored since A.I. have been at least decent.

I know some people are going to hate me for posting this but...

WHY in the world is there a need for the original album here? I mean, most of the time it's annoying but usually those are under 45 minutes and the release will be 2 discs anyway. In this case there's a full 70 minutes.....
Now I absolutely love this score so I'm probably going to have to buy this (though I never did get POTA), but it's just mind boggling. Is the album at least different takes or something?
I know I remember reading that sometimes including the original is contractual, that people have to 'be able to replicate the original album' at the least -- but the way it was done in Batman Returns was IMO the best way, simply put the tracks that are different at the end. Now obviously it's possible that wasn't possible here......but do people really feel the need -- as buyers -- to have a full 70 minute album, of the same music as the other 2 CDs, that's they've had for 14 years (AND is readily available extremely cheap) included and probably inflating the price, not to mention the shelf space?

Can someone explain this in calm collected terms as to what the benefit is?

EDIT: Perhaps the above is pretty pointless. It DOES say in the poster thing "2 hours of unreleased music" which I assume means they maybe even different recording sessions....in which case I completely approve of the album being included.

It seems that you need to calm a bit, because it appears that the original album configuration isn't even presented. It appears that disc 3 is "Additional Music."

Sometimes they need to include the original album because they screwed up the presentation of their "new and improved" version by letting Dan "produce" it as per his unique, non-musical vision.
