I thought the first half of PASSION was a bit slow but it really kicks into gear after the murder.

The only time I've been truly disappointed in De Palma was REDACTED.

Thor, you have truly lost it. Really.
Added to your fleet of turned-backs...

No, I think you need to reevaluate your fandom. You say you're a De Palma fan, and you can't recognize the qualities in PASSION. That's disturbing.

I'm with Sean.
ANY true and proper DePalma fan who can compare something like PASSION to his work on CARRIE, DRESSED TO KILL, BLOW OUT, CASUALTIES OF WAR, THE UNTOUCHABLES, CARLITO'S WAY (hell, even THE FURY & BODY DOUBLE) and say it's on par with them, let alone in the same universe...well...I truly have no words.
I'm beginning to think you say some stuff just to get a rise outta people, Thor.

Is FEMME FATALE the one with the Bolero/jewel necklace/sexy ladies heist beginning?

The last time I can remember a DePalma film of at least reminding me how great he used to be, would be parts of SNAKE EYES & FEMME FATALE, if FF is the one I'm thinking of.
But even they are only sporadically enjoyable.

Not at all. All my film critic colleagues are pretty much in unison when it comes to praise for that film, so I'm actually kinda flabbergasted by the negative comments here -- from people who are presumably interested in De Palma; yet not being able to see the lush, Argento-ish style exercise he's doing here. It's obviously not on the level of a DRESSED TO KILL or CARRIE or BLOW OUT, but it's heads and shoulders above goofy stuff like THE FURY.

Apparently DOMINO's original running time was 148 minutes. The release print runs 89 minutes. Not a good sign. It makes one wonder if the producers had their way with the film after DePalma left the picture.

Ouch!
That's a big difference, without sacrificing pacing and coherence!!
I wonder how much Donaggio score has ended up being junked too frown

I am a true De Palma fan since the 80's (and yes, I love Raising Cain) and Passion definitely sucks. Recycling themes from his previous films doesn't make it a good one, especially when it looks like a German tv-movie from the 90's.

Unfortunately, I've been told that Domino is not better. May be it explains why it has been refused by so many festivals.

Loving Passion just because it's been directed by De Palma is pure fanboy attitude.

Apparently it's BIG in Norway!

Not sure about Norway, but very well received among film critics and De Palma fans over here. And I couldn't agree more -- a superb film all around. Subversive and delicious. So in my experience, FSM is the odd one out here.

But when you say 'over here', you live in Norway?
So, it's popular in Norway...yes?

How does it rate on those 'popular with the kids' -ometers like Rotten Tomatoes and the like?

Sure. But I don't believe it registered very much with regular audiences, which is what I thought you referred to.

How does it rate on those 'popular with the kids' -ometers like Rotten Tomatoes and the like?

No idea. I live in a bubble in which I have all the correct opinions, screw the rest! big grin

Well, that's not very open-minded now, is it.
How are you ever gonna learn or expand your horizons with that attitude?

Just checked Rotten Tomatoes and while I would never use any of those...things as an arbiter of taste, I must challenge your assumption that FSM is the 'odd one out'.
It most certainly isn't, in the case of PASSION.

I don't believe it has ever been confirmed that there was a director's cut of "Domino" that ran 148 minutes. A year ago on Wikipedia and IMDB the running times oddly fluctuated between 145 and 148 minutes, and this was before Donaggio recorded his score. I'm going to wait until De Palma addresses the running time before I start worrying that the studio pulled a "Magnificent Ambersons" on him. As for now, the fact that Donaggio's score wasn't rejected is a good indication that what we're going to get is De Palma approved.

May be. I don't care. It's a fantastic film.

Absolute nonsense. De Palma is known for over-the-top acting and staging the noir tropes in a self-aware fashion. And he executed this brilliantly in PASSION. He's in absolute top form in that, and anyone who can't see that is not a true De Palma fan, sorry.

Sorry, IMO it's a stinky movie, like many De Palma films are. I applaud him for his well done films. Try watching the movie that Passion is taken from - Love Crime - THAT is a terrific film. Passion gets it all wrong.
