I sampled Medal of Honor and it didn't do anything for me.

The sequel scores as well? I'm not generally a fan of Giacchino, however his contributions to the Medal of Honor series are excellent.

Not sure which one I sampled. I'll give it another try.

Not to me. As much as the phrase "earworm" is tossed about here regarding this score, I can never remember anything about it while it's not on (though I think it's pleasant enough – albeit unsurprising – when I play it).

"Inside Out" and "Ratatouille" are the finest Giacchinos in my book.

I love Inside Out the film, but don't recall anything memorable about the music. Don't recall Ratatouille, though I only saw the film once and probably never sampled the score on it's own.

Just out of curiosity do you like "Agent Cody Banks"? (now OOP) It has the same vibe as Homecoming that I love.

My guess was that was never his sound, the producers probably told him that they wanted a continuation of Saving Private Ryan and action music that closely resembled the Maestros.

That is incorrect. Medal of Honor was Giacchino's sound (influenced by Williams and all of the soundtracks he listened to growing up) early on in his career. However, he purposefully changed that sound when LOST came around.

This is why I thought Rogue One was such a disappointment. Giacchino said he was going to tap the Medal of Honor sound, which made me think we were going to get music like that.

I don't remember him saying that. Could you point me in the direction of that exact quote?

Instead we got a pretty dull score that pales in comparison to the musical landscape in Medal of Honor.

I disagree. I think Rogue One is a fabulous score.

PS - The best Giacchino has ever done, IMO, continues to be his video game music; the Medal of Honor series and the brilliant Secret Weapons Over Normandy!

Fantastic? Yes. Finest? No.

Hmmm. John Carter is up there. I'm still a big Rogue One fan. The Incredibles is still incredible. Lost is quite the opus.

Anyone praising this score ought to just go listen to Agent Cody Banks. Same thing, but better.

I enjoyed "Rogue One" when I listened to it. But don't find it memorable and haven't had the urge to go back to it. So I guess I would call it serviceable, which is the best one can hope for nowadays for the most part.

But for me Giacchino´s finest hour remains JOHN CARTER.
Amen.

Someone already replied Amen to your Amen. So, Hallelujah?

Tough crowd. I evidently have a thing for flat, bland, painful, reshuffled, and just there film music. frown

I agree with Star Trek Into Darkness (a film title seemingly designed for the puneriffic Giacchino). It sure is a powerhouse score.

I’ve listened to John Carter before, once in film and once on album, and I’m afraid I didn’t get anything out of it. I obviously need to try it again.

I’d be interested to see how Cody Banks sounds with the comparisons to Homecoming here.

And thanks for the advice on Google, Peter. FSM search turned up nothing for me, yet there it is: the thread I knew must surely exist. Anyway this thread will serve its own broader purpose: a discussion of Giacchino’s finer works.

As I said I love both scores and they're similar in style. Cody Banks probably gets the upper hand (though not an action score) the action music near the end is absolutely fantastic.

Folks can be pretty hard on Giacchino around these parts, alas.

There’s a 2-CD expanded promo of JOHN CARTER out there.

It would be great if some soundtrack outfit could release it.

I’d grab it in a heartbeat.

Nope, there's only a recording sessions bootleg.

Also amen. Closest Giacchino has come to giving us a genuinely great space opera score. Far more inspired than anything else I'v heard from him so far.

Sorry, but Giacchino's Star Wars is Jupiter Ascending.

So...any reason why we couldn't have just let this chap enjoy this score without being buttheads?
