I thought all the Unicorn CDs went bad, mine certainly did, the only CDs of mine that did go bad.

I think that was a bit hit and miss. My Unicorn CDs all developed a golden sheen but play perfectly.

How strange, I'd been looking at the prices of these on the likes of ebay/discogs for the past few weeks.
Now ordered from Amazon UK.

Quick question though, are the suites here the same as Varese included in their Concert Suites set or are they different recordings / something else ?

Did they finally fix the pitch fuck-up in "Radar," and did they reinstate the two deleted tracks?

Deutsche Grammophon Is the manufacturer. Did they buy the Decca label? A number of these recordings were released in 2010 under the Decca Eloquence label.

DG and Decca are both owned by UMG.

These are apparently newly remastered. And may I ask exactly what two tracks were left off what album?

The Gerhardt recordings could be done because RCA had the QUAD masters. Herrmann's Phase 4 stuff was never done that way, therefore there's no way for them to do them as SACDs unless it's two track - unless they could get the original multi-track tapes, which is doubtful.

The Fantasy Film World of BH was released as a four-channel reel-to-reel tape in addition to the 2-channel LP version. It is available on Blu-Ray audio from this company:

The shipping for this thing is as low as $6.25 in the States, almost $50 to Canada!

Interesting, but they don’t look like licensed recordings.

Out of interest, I know this box set does not include Herrmann's classical recordings, but what do people think about his The Planets?

It seems to get pretty bad reviews overall, but what do we think? Do we covet it?

Cheers

Herrmann's version of The Planets is different but I like it very much. Especially his take on Mars is fascinating.

Here's a more postive review:

Whoa ! Thanks for this update. but is this a legit transfer mix using the original quad tapes? If it is then the sound must be incredibly good!

As Ed said, I doubt this is a properly licensed release.

HDTT has probably used a copy of the commercial tapes released in the 70s:

I welcome the set and don't mind that the set's focus is on Herrmann's film scores, as the classical recordings by Herrmann I'm familiar with just aren't all that good (in comparison to the many superior versions available).

Yes, I'm not bothered about the classical recordings, as Herrmann's conducting can be a wee bit ponderous on the classical stuff, & occasionally with his film re-recordings as well. I find Jason & The Argonauts & Seventh Voyage Of Sinbad to be too slow (but happily Journey To The Centre Of The Earth sounds about right).

The most common criticism is the tempi. I got the original Decca Phase-4 LP when it was first released. It's still in excellent condition, and it's on my list for LP-to CD transfer. Over time, I gradually came to appreciate the Herrmann tempi choices. I find "Mars" to be even more powerful under his baton, and the others, especially Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, have far more gravitas.
