The 3-CD set is a glorious collectors item to be treasured, but this 2-CD version will now be THE soundtrack album, from Paramount, for Star Trek-The Motion Picture. Mike M. Wow, thanks Mike for the background summary, I remember back in the day Usenet rumors of Sony having to withdraw the Star Trek - The Motion Picture release. It was still a good release in its day. Of course, the LLL 3CD set is one of the all time great definitive film score releases, a treasure to have. I'm glad to see the "main program" now back in print. This score should always be in print.

Fascinating behind the scenes info Mike -- thanks for sharing! So does Sony still maintain album rights to Star Trek V? Yavar

If this is now the "defintive" edition, does it include "Inner Workings" with wind machine, as presented on the 50th anniversary set? There's a 50th anniversary set for a movie that's 43 years old?

Wasn't it a deliberate choice (per what Goldsmith would have preferred) to go with the version that's on the 3 CD set? I would also think that the film version of ending of The Meld will be left off of this set as well. I guess it all depends on what's going to be included on that 2nd CD.

What I'm trying to figure out (and other people are asking), are there new sources being utilized, or any improvement in sound quality? Or is this basically the older masters restructured? This set looks to be a great addition for anyone who hasn't gotten the original 3-disc expansion, but would there be any reason for someone like me, who already has the previous expansion, to also invest in this set as well?

"inner Workings" is the updated version, of course. I don't see this as a "pruned" release, but rather as the new official soundtrack, with a previous version containing numerous tracks geared toward collectors. It shouldn't be hard to figure out what those are.

I don't see this as a "pruned" release, but rather as the new official soundtrack, with a previous version containing numerous tracks geared toward collectors. It shouldn't be hard to figure out what those are. Same masters used or are these from different or new multi-trak masters used for the forthcoming 4K UHD release? Just trying to understand if this new 2 disc has any potential sound quality differences over the 3-disc version. Thanks so much for your dedication to these projects and for posting this information here!!! Rich The multi-track transfers in 2011 for 2012 LLL release were done in expectation of Director's Edition happening shortly after. We didn't think it would be a 10 year wait, but the material sat around ready to go and Atmos fortuitously came on the scene in the interim. For the soundtrack, the mixes are the same as last time, but it was an opportunity to fix anything remaining that was at all bothersome to my ear. Upgrades are esoteric in character and likely wouldn't be noticeable on an average listen. But there is one distinction about the new edition to note when the release info is posted by La-La Land next week. We should leave it there and each person can make a decision then.
