The Silvestri rejected score wasn't very good, in my opinion. I'm always confused why it is regarded so highly honestly.
For my own comment I was mainly joking - I think it's actually pretty cheesy with the wailing guitars. But while I do like Elfman's music for the first MISSION IMPOSSIBLE the most and I find the newer ones to be too hyperactive (the films too), the comments here about ROGUE NATION are pushing me to listen to that again and I like it a lot more. It's a bit repetitive and overly-retro/pastichey, but it's pretty fun and engaging and well put together. Very much like an updated version of the original TV show.

#1 - Rogue Nation: Kraemer absolutely nailed this. It's perhaps the best action score of of the 2000's. The A400 is the best cue of the entire franchise, and Moroccan Pursuit is EXACLTY the kind of fun, thrilling action adventure music that is totally absent from films these days.
#2 - M:I - Elfman's score is SO intricate - maybe with the best bongo/percussion section from the lot. That said, it's not very heavy on action, but has the best "heist/caper" music.
#3 - M:I III - I was really nervous when Giacchino was announced for this. I hadnt heard The Incredibles at this point and thought "Isn't he just that video game guy?". Luckily, he knocked it out of the park, bringing his LOST sound (what we now know is actually *his* sound) into a bigger environment.
#4 - Ghost Protocol - I actually found this quite disappointing compared to M:I III. I hoped it would be more of the same, but it sounds a bit cheap and amateurish. Somebody described the slow "jazzy" versions of the theme sounding like "Mission: Impossible - The Porno". That said, it does contain one of the best action cues of the series in World's Worst Parking Valet.
#5 - Fallout - McQuarrie has made some good movies, but replacing Kraemer with Balfe...what an awful, awful decision. The biggest kick in the teeth the series has had from a musical standpoint. It wasn't QUITE as bad as I feared it may turn out, but it's just apeing The Dark Knight. All the fun an excitement that Kraemer brought to the series is gone. Now we're just in the most generic, trailer-music sounding territory there is and it's just sad.
#6 - M:I 2 - As much as I think Balfe is the wrong composer for the series, Zimmer's score is just bizarre. It's kinda fun looking back at how this was presumably "cool" in the year 2000, but it's so out of place with the rest of the series. A guilty pleasure these days, if anything.
Also, as inappropriate Silvestri's rejected score was with the wailing guitars, his train cue is immensely fun - just written for the wrong movie! If Silvestri was in his 90's *fully orchestral* mode ala parts of Judge Dredd/Eraser, this would have been great. I'd also love to hear an M:I score with his more modern action sound ala "Just About Close Enough" from G.I. Joe.
I think after Ant-Man and Hawkeye, Christophe Beck needs to be given a shot at these. But instead, it looks like they're sticking with Balfe. Such a shame.

#2 - Rogue Nation - Fun and old-fashioned, just the way I like it, in line with the more traditional approach of the film
#3 - Fallout - at first I was hesitant, but then I loved how Balfe integrated the MV sound with the M:I atmosphere.
#4 - Ghost Protocol - Laid back, jazzier at times, a good time
#5 - M:I 3 - a bit too overstuffed with too busy action, and the sound should be much clearer
#6 - M:I 2 - too heavy rock-anthem-laden, but still fun if I'm in the mood for it.

There are other Giacchino scores, mostly the earlier ones, which sound a bit muddy. It seems that was intentional.

There are other Giacchino scores, mostly the earlier ones, which sound a bit muddy. It seems that was intentional.

I was going to point out that MI3 had sound baffles up during the recording while GHOST PROTOCOL didn't. It's typical with big band-style performances rather than the larger orchestral sound, but requires more mixing work to meld the individual sections together. To me that's what I hear in the "flatness" of MI3 where the elements just don't mesh together.

It's interesting how my opinion of the movie clouds or shades my opinion of the music as for me much of it is so tied together. I don't like MI:2 very much as a movie and while I like what Zimmer did, I can't help but put it at the bottom while I LOVE the Fallout movie and so probably have that score too high.
