I think the amount is different now, but for older scores, you didn't have to pay the re-use fees at 9,999 copies -- which people just round up for an even 10,000 number.

But 10,000 doesn't mean it's a good seller. Even if a film has a large fan base, doesn't mean it translates into them wanting to hear score outside a film and want to own it to boot.

It's Jerry Goldsmith and widely considered one of his best scores amongst his fan base, so a score like this would sell way way way more than, say, "Rent-A-Cop" and "Mr. Baseball" to begin with.

Then of course you have online retailers like SAE, who buy a certain amount to sell. Because it's Star Tre and a fan favorite, you'd probably have other retailers who would buy a certain amount to sell, too.

Unless somebody gives in the inside details, it's hard to know if it really moved 10,000 units. The contract may have expired and not everything was pressed. I seem to also recall that when a contract expires and you still have units, you [the label] can't legally sell them and have to destroy the remainder, so even if 9,999 units were made, they don't all sell. And a sell out only means the label has sold out -- there may be many units across retailers that didn't move and are sitting there.

Just some thoughts and reminders of things mentioned before.

TMP sold out at 10k units. Passion of the Christ did not

The CDs are fine, but if I have to grumble about something, then it is jewel case. I had serious problems to take out the CD from the inner holder. Strong pressing with the thumb, but nevertheless a terrible bending of the disc was necessary to take it out. The inner holder is too strong. The holders from the old discs in the 1980's and 1990's were much better.

Until they weren’t. The older ones would frequently break and then your CD would be floating around freely in the case. But I do get your points about the new ones old is so tight it takes a lot of energy to get it out.

Not in my collection. Of course, some jewel cases have some cracks, but the inner holders in all of my 1980/90's CDs are intact.

“ He tortured those people, but none of them would tell him anything. He went wild. He slit their throats.”

Paul Winfield was so damn good in this (and everything)

Didn't realize ST:TMP sold out. It remains my favorite expansion ever.

I'm interested, four months after its release, how the general playability and sound quality of this fine release is holding up for everyone else.

I do admit, with less digital muck in some places, I've listened to it as much as I did the Atlantic LP back in the day.

Well, I'm not listening to Field of Dreams until the new CD gets here so I'm kind of foraging around my Horner collection. (And lets face it, Star Trek is never far from being played for me.)

Boy am I glad that this has the OST!

But seriously folks. This is still a more than worthwhile upgrade. It's everything we wanted even after the amazing FSM release. I seriously am glad that it has the OST. I still consider the LP version of Battle in the Mutara Nebula to be superior to the film version. (And what a luxury that I can even care about those differences.) It's still one of those albums from Back in the Day that shows what an art assembling an OST could be.

To be honest I don't listen to the alternates a tremendous amount but I'm glad to have them. The discrete cues are super to have for playlists and are a little bit nicer to the edits that I already made myself 10 years ago.

Not to pick at the scab, but I am surprised at how much I listen to the epilogue both with and without Nimoy. (For any newcomers it was legitimate if rather overblown complaint that the FSM did not have room for both and they went with the version with Nimoy.)

Nimoy's voice was part of the soundtrack. It never bothered me. Still great to have the epilogue without the voice over too. I too have a much greater appreciation for the album presentations.

For those that would like to own the OST program in genuine, hi-res 96/24...

Just ignore that the front cover says "Digital Recording." wink

Is that the new remix you and Mike made for the LLL CD?

Or is that WMG doing their own work on the tapes and might sound different from your version?

Yes, it's the new edit and mix.

Very cool!

I love that you guys do your work in high res even though you know it's going on the red book special label CDs. I hope that more major music labels release your OST rebuilds as high res downloads!

For those interested, tracks 1-6 of this hi-res album master correspond with tracks 1, 9, 7, 10, 3, and 5 from disc 1. They're identical. Track 7 corresponds with disc 1, track 16, but does not have the "Wild Orchestra" overlay. "Genesis Countdown" is the same as disc 1, track 18 except for the short insert used on the OST. Finally the "Epilogue/End Title" is the same mix as disc 1, track 21 but now has (heaven help me) Nimoy's voice over and also the short insert at the end of the "End Titles."

I know there's a Lossless copy on Apple Music - is this the same new LLL mix or is that still the original album release?

The easiest way to tell is with the length of the "Main Title." The new master runs 3:14 while the old master is 3:08.

Gotcha. In that case Apple Music is still the old master.

They're identical

Wait, what? I thought Disc 1 of the LLL was sourced from the 1st generation 1/2" analog tape that captured the live 3-channel mix of every take of every cue, and your OST rebuild was sourced from the second generation 1/2" tape that captured selected takes only from the 3M digital output?
