R.I.P. Sir Andrè Previn. I first got interested in Previn's work with his jazz albums via my father but it was his film work that really interested me, and he did two film music shows on his Public Television Series "Previn At The Pittsburgh" one with John Williams conducting his theme from "Star Wars" and another with Williams and Miklos Rozsa in which they engage in a conversation about Bernard Herrmann's score about "The Day The Earth Stood Still" in which Previn was amazed about the electronic instruments used in the score. He then quipped, "Fine. Now will you get an electric blanket? It's cold in here!" Both "The 4 Horsemen Of The Apocalypse" and "Bad Day At Black Rock" remain my two favorite Previn scores. He in my book was one of the best interpreters of both Sir William Walton's and Ralph Vaughan Williams' work.

Bizarrely, he is mentioned in the 1990 song "Hello" by The Beloved, after 4:03:

It's still better than prog-rock.

To his achievements we should add leading the world premiere of Miklos Rozsa's Viola Concerto (Pittsburgh, 1984), the second performance of the Piano Concerto (Houston, 1968), and a broadcast of the Tripartita (London, c. 1978).

My go-to is always Two for the Seesaw. Doing that and other Previns was very important to me. For anyone who doesn't have Two for the Seesaw and I can only take pity on you. Same with Elmer Gantry - we still have a few copies of each. Previn will always be in my pantheon of great film composers of any age.

One of the greats. R.I.P.

Every score I've heard by him is wonderful, but my favorites are "Two for the Seesaw" and "The Subterraneans" (I love both films, too).

Saw Previn in concert about 10 years ago conducting his and Dvorak's oeuvres. That was real good!

His film music is so old that I find it hard to believe that he actually lived until this year. It's all 50's and 60's stuff, all recorded so long ago. Now playing my favorite -- "The Fortune Cookie" (I would love a complete release of this).

A huge loss.

We've lost a genius.

Such a creative and rich career.

RIP

Very very sad news, he was one of the greats: his versatility was unparalleled, from Hollywood scores to conducting the Great Repertoire, via composing some really good pieces (I like the piano and violin concertos very much).
I am glad I was able to see him live a number of times, especially in London with his beloved LSO.
Last time was in 2013, when he made his La Scala debut (at the fresh age of 83!).
I knew he was quite frail, but i was a bit shocked nonetheless..he was "very" frail, for a moment i could sense in the audience the expectancy..is he going to make it to the podium ?
He did..and all changed: he was suddenly in complete command of the La Scala orchestra (a somewhat "difficult" ensemble, which he didn't know beforehand), and he gave us a really good concert in a taxing program (TWO Brahms symphonies, 3&4).
Many, many cd's from him remain in my collection as references..RIP maestro.

There's a great documentary I watched sometime last year on Sky Arts in the UK about Previn's career and working with his then wife, Anne-Sophie Mutter. I don't know if it's available online, but I'm hoping they show it again or it's available on demand.

A man of many talents (classical, jazz, musicals, concert, opera) but I'll always remember him for his beautiful film scores. His score to 4 Horseman Of The Apocalypse is a beauty!

a statement from Anne-Sophie MUTTER

John Williams' comments :

With the passing of Michel Legrand and now Andre Prévin, Mr Williams has lost two of his closest friends and colleagues in less than five weeks.

beautiful statement from Ms. Mutter.
Even if they were married only 4 years, they had a musical partnership way before that, and they remained very close afterwards.
I read an interview where Maestro Previn, which was an ironic, (sometimes sharply so) person, called it "the divorce that didn't work".
Also, on the Guardian , there's a tribute from Mia Farrow quoted from Twitter that I found very affectionate.

One of my favorite scores of André Previn is Bad Day at Black Rock. Previn’s Music was a perfect fit for this 1955 film.

I remember seeing André Previn and Rosza and Williams with the Pittsburgh Orchestra...and talking about Benny Herrmann ...Previn got a big thrill egging on Herrmann...Previn also had said on numerous occasions to Johnny T..to do less Film Composing and do more Classical Work.

Andre Previn will be missed.

"A true Renaissance Composer" - R.I.P Mr Andre Previn / Preview!
Remembrances of a fine concert performance by himself featuring Anne Sophie Mutter with the London Symphony Orchestra
which had a live radio broadcast on the night!

Have to apologize for my comments about Andre Pevin but it still rankles what he said about JW wasting his time writing music for film. But I know Williams' love for Mr. Previn. Saw it when Mr. Previn was a guest with the Boston Pops. John Williams almost was teary eyed when he tried to tell Previn how much he appreciated him but Mr. Previn cut him off.

So I apologize again.
