SchiffyM:
I believe Powell said in an interview that when Carter Burwell's score was rejected, there was not a lot of money left for a big, orchestral score, so it was conceived to be more percussive and feature solo instruments.

If he said it was rejected, that's not quite true. Burwell had recorded a little over twenty minutes of score (I have no idea if he demoed the rest), the film underwent some changes, and when they needed Burwell again, Burwell was not available.

According to the book TORN MUSIC by Gergely Hubai, Burwell wrote a complete score and provided synth-sampler demos for the director. About one-third of the score was actually recorded before Burwell found out that his wife was about to give birth. Burwell flew to New York to be with his wife. That was the day before 9/11. The film was put on hold for half a year after 9/11. When the producers were ready to restart production, Burwell decided to stay with his wife in New York instead of finishing the film. Therefore, Powell was hired to score the film!

A year and a half after 9/11 would be early 2003, but the film opened in June 2002?

roll eyes

It was a typo. I meant to say half a year! Dyslexia is a bitch!

I know only what I've read. I certainly haven't done the impressive research you have, Justin.

That said, "the film was re-edited and the composer was no longer available" is pretty much the "it's not you, it's me" of film score firings.

Not that it proves anything, but the liner notes for this new release say that Powell was hired when the previous composer left due to “creative differences.” Burwell is not mentioned by name however.

Am I crazy, or is there music missing from this? Specifically the cue when Bourne remembers what happened on the ship and how he lost his memory...

Yes, it is deliberately incomplete. Powell says:

Interesting! And kind of disappointing.

Isn’t it common not to include these edits?

It kinda varies with each release but it makes sense Powell didn't want to include tracks that were created editorially.

I gave the unused chase cue another listen and in all honesty it isn't very good so I don't mind it's not included.

I wouldn't call it incomplete, if all the actual recorded music is there.

I'm rather enjoying this new edition.

Do we know which cues off the original album aren't represented in this new one?

And do we know who got those signed CD covers?

Varese does signed CD's? I didn't know that was a thing with them.

Are those 4 tracks alternates or something? Since it seems that this new Varese edition has the complete score.

I guess they are doing that for this release. They just posted on Facebook that 20 random people, who order by June 5th, will be picked.

They have not chosen the 20 people yet.

The Drum and Base Remix was likely created specifically for the OST by Moby.

The others might be album edits from multiple cues or created specifically for the OST, but I'm unsure about that. I don't think they are used in the movie.

Thanks! Sounds like to be a completest with this score you'll need to have both the OST album and this new edition then.
