What are the odds the reason it's 72 minutes is that it's actually a cheeseball all-synclavier 80s throwback Delta Force-like score?

No, just me who's hoping for that? OK then.

Silvestri credited for conducting an all-electronic score?

That'd be even more impressive than a 54 second long "Final Battle".

"Final Battle" is only 54 seconds long?

If only to see how the hell they swung that, I'm gonna be seeing this.

Maybe they go in knowing, and since knowing is half the battle...

Unfortunately it wouldn't be the first time electronic scores have had "conducting" credits. It wouldn't even be the first time for Silvestri, as anybody who got the American Anthem soundtrack and read the album credits will know (none of the orchestral music is on the album, and the only two Silvestri cuts are both synth tracks).

LOL! Perhaps they had to shorten the final battle so that there was time for the public service announcement at the end. After all we need a certain percentage of the film to be educational.

http://www.colosseum.de/product_info.php/info/p2246_G-I--Joe---Geheimauftrag-Cobra.html

Soundclips are up, at least for 4 tracks and these short bits already make me excited as hell!

Usually, after the clips are up it takes colosseum records 4 more days up to one week until they ship the discs. European pre-orders could already arrive next weekend! Yay!

There is some music on the Hershey Canada site. This may be the JOE theme.

"This may be the JOE theme."

From what i have heard of the score already (and i am not just talking 30 sec sound clips), i can say with confidence that this is most certainly production music. I can't recognize the theme from the few parts of the score i have heard already (which i would describe as silvestris americana style mixed with tomb raider beats... all on full steroids). It's also important to point out that this does not really sound like something silvestri would compose.

The full cd should arrive here in a few more days, so i can tell you soon if its really part of the score or just some weird cue they have picked from a production music cd.

Does Mr S use his Synclavier anymore?

I have just heard the full score and it's definitely not part of Silvestri's music. The main theme is actually in the "Delivering the Warhead" sound clip at the Colosseum page from what I can tell. Definitely don't expect any themes as memorable as in Mummy Returns or even Van Helsing.

I was afraid that the score was going to be jumbled. I am ready to give it a listen, but I have to say that once I saw the trailer...well my hopes were dashed a little.

I'm anxiously awaiting both film and score. I was so excited that Silvestri was announced as the composer because I'd always hoped he would do the score whenever a G.I. Joe movie finally got off the ground. (Ironically, I used to say The Delta Force was probably the closest we'd ever get to one.)

August 7 can't come soon enough for me. smile

I have received my CD from colosseum records yesterday.

First of all: The score is so very good!

Second of all: the sound is NOT!

When i listened to the music on my good quality hi-fi stereo system, i noticed it sounded very flat and muffled. I then increased the higher frequencies and heard compression noise!

I have talked to others who received their discs and they confirmed they have the same issue. Some have run spectral analysis and there are frequency cutoffs typical of mp3 files. Someone must have sleeped during the production of the CD and used a lossy source as master.

I have contacted both colosseum and varese and hopefully will receive some answers soon. When i buy a cd i dont expect some download quality.

At first listen, this one's a disappointment. There's lots going on in action cues like "Just About Close Enough", but thematically it's too weak to be memorable.

I was expecting this score to polarize the opinions. However, this one has a great potential of getting better with each listen. I have already become addicted. The thematic development is there, but since this movie is an origin story the themes are only more hinted at except for the main theme.

And there is no choir or female voice, something that feels very refreshing. The electronics are really only there in the first half and make room for an incredible orchestral finale. End Credits is now one of my top favorite silvestri tracks!

If only the sound would be better...

I would suggest everyone who has the score to email varese about the sound issue! Don't let them get away with this poor mastering job!

God I'm so sick of origin movie scores "hinting" at themes.

Its not like it does not have some obvious thematic statements at all. Thats not what i said. If you want just themes, listen to the second half of the album and ignore the first. From track 13 on this one is pure fun to listen to. And silvestri is in full control of the orchestra. As far as that is concerned, it blows lots of recent action scores right out of the water, into the orbit and back to that giant robot planet where they came from. "Just about close enough" is for me worth the price of the album alone.

But like i said, there are issues with the sound being mastered from a lossy source so if you pre-ordered this, ask varese and threat to cancel your orders if the issue isnt solved!

I would also recommend screen archives to ask varese about this!

So there are identifiable themes for G.I. Joe and Cobra and such, they just don't appear until later in the film? I was also hoping some subtle nods to the music of the cartoon, but I'm sure that's too much to ask for. (I love the music in the cartoon and wish Robert Walsh could have gotten that CD released.)

God I'm so sick of origin movie scores "hinting" at themes.

I agree. I mean, give us something to hang onto.

So far it sounds more like Silvestri in THE LAST KISS GOODNIGHT and ERASER mode than THE MUMMY RETURNS and VAN HELSING. The themes are there, but they don't sound as obvious to me as his last few scores.

I got that impression as well while watching the exclusive clips that are on Stephen Sommers' website. I haven't bought many "current" scores in awhile, but if the rest of the score is anything like the material in those clips, I'll definitely be picking it up on my way home from the theater. big grin
