This news should not be a surprise to anyone who has read Roger's posts for the last year or so. He basically came out and said that Intrada was doing Conan a long time ago!

Do you mean to say that anyone who already knew won't be as surprised as those who didn't?

And those people from Tadlow went through all that trouble to do a rerecording?

Well now. I guess Roger decided to spill the beans!

I already knew that Intrada was working on both Barbarian and Destroyer since early May, after I had a private conversation with Roger about the IMDb posting... primarily to tell him to brace himself for an onslaught of e-mails. Still, it's very exciting news, and I'm likely going to set aside at least $200 for both of these releases. Barbarian is among my all-time favorite scores, and I'll be buying up five or six copies for friends of mine who don't visit FSM.

Destroyer is not a score that I've yet heard, unfortunately. I lack any of the existing releases.

Still, I just WANT to hear that remastered and remixed Riders of Doom - as well as orchestral-only and choir-only versions, if those even exist as separate recordings.

Bravo, Intrada!

What IMDB posting?

I'll get Barbarian, but I'll opt for the Destroyer re-recording instead. Poledouris was right, it sounds awful, but I'm sure there will be purists that consider the film version the definitive version for reasons that still elude me

Intrada, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if we were good customers or bad. Why we bought, or why we didn't. All that matters is that two of your Conan soundtracks will stand against many. That's what's important! Valor pleases you, Intrada... so grant me one request. Grant me these soundtracks! And if you do not listen, than to SonMay with you!

No, really -- 1941 is cool, but a complete and restored Conan is just about the greatest news I can possibly imagine.

And yes, Basil did in fact dislike his original recording. I heard it with my own two ears. The amusing thing is, after spending a good hour over lunch telling me how much he disliked the score, I awkwardly asked him if he could sign my copy of Conan. lol With a raised eyebrow, he graciously signed it and handed it back to me. It was quite amusing actually. The cd is a highlight of my collection.

I often think artist are their harshest critics. An artist will always find something wrong with their work. However, at the end of the day, with all of todays modern mastering technologies at hand, I think Basil would have been happy with both the originals and the rerecordings being out there. . .letting his fans experience the best of both worlds.

Huh. I thought I was the only person on this board who knew what SonMay was.

Here's one that I wrote some nine months ago:

Roger, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we ordered our CDs, or why we complained when the speculators bought them up. All that matters is that you and Doug stood against many. That's what's important! Universal pleases you, Roger... so grant me one request. Grant me Conan! And if you do not listen, then to HELL with you!

Even though the rerecording is so good, I'll still get the OST as well. barbarian is one of the best scores, period. And I know many agree.

Destroyer....probably will wait and see.

That's nice for people who want the original score as recorded for the films. However, the performance of the smaller Italian orchestras for Conan leave somewhat to be desired. The original recordings have that rawness that convey the music well, but things like the percussion opening "Prologue/Anvil of Crom" and the French horns just sound underpowered. That's something a pristine remix can't remedy, but makes it more apparent.

The Prague re-recording is so robust and you can feel the music is more precise because of the more experienced musicians (and more rehearsal time).

I'm not dissuading anyone from buying one or the other. Just my two cents.

Wow. Just... wow. HUGE news. And as a Poledouris fan, I'll be so ready to get them both. I echo what we've said throughout the film score collecting years: "Thank you, Intrada!"

I think my brain just exploaded! eek

Best news I've heard for ages - I'm a huge fan of Poledouris and Conan the Barbarian could by my all-time favourite soundtrack (at least among my top 5).

I understand that Poledouris wasn't satisfied with the performance - as it has been said, the artist is often his own harshest critic. Whenever I create something, be it a painting, a text or a film, I always know exactly what whent wrong, even the smallest details that no one else would notice.

That being said, the original recording is still the version that is etched in my brain and will always sound "right" to me, even though some people will say that it sounds "wrong" for technical reasons.

From Roger...

Okay, I know rumors started on this. Not sure where it started (AICN perhaps?), but given the number of requests we get for clarity, I thought I would do one posting for my own sanity. Yes, we are restoring and releasing both CONAN THE BARBARIAN and CONAN THE DESTROYER. Yes, the rumors that the masters were missing were false. They were there...24-track and 4-track units in pristine condition and complete, sitting right where we expected them to be at Universal. We transferred everything...the sound is stunning. Simply stunning. Going back to the 24-track is going to reveal a detail and ferocity on both scores you just haven't heard before. Basil often went for a muscular, powerhouse over the top performance to match unrivaled visuals and got it in a way no big orchestral score had quite achieved up to that point. Remember the feeling when you heard these scores for the first time? You'll feel it again! Fans of these scores should be ready to have their socks knocked off.

Yet, Roger didn't say when they are going to released or if they will be 2 cd sets ? & most important.......How many COPIES they will be or if they are MAF's?????????????

Roger is still sneaky!!! But.. U gotta love him for it.
