Since this question is not limited to film scores, one of my all time favorite moments of the saxophone in ANY orchestral setting occurs in THE WOODEN PRINCE by Béla Bartók, which all of a sudden features three saxophones yearning and contemplating, but never overstating their point... as great a musical (dramatic) highlighting for any instrument as I have ever heard in any composition. It is just a short musical moment.... but wow, what a moment. Enthusiastic hell yes for Wooden Prince, a masterpiece that never seems to get enough love. Those saxophones are indeed iconic.

Playing IN DREAMS by Elliot Goldenthal right now. Track 6, Rubber Room Stomp. We've all heard of Goldsmith's 'synth farts'. This track contains EG's 'sax farts'.

While I'm on my Goldenthal kick, there's an almost James Bondian sax kick in track 2 (Consolation) of A TIME TO KILL. What a Bond score EG would have written.

Am I really the first to mention the love theme from Blade Runner? Please don't tell me it's a fake sax in there, being an electronic score and all...

Lots of good posts, so I'll add three that haven't been mentioned Alan Silvestri - Romancing the Stone David Foster - The Secret of My Success and Stealing Home For some reason I remember the say in St Elmos Fire, but not in Secret Of My Success or Stealing Home... In Secret of my Success, he uses it in "Gazebo" and "Water Fountain" In Stealing Home, he uses it in the Main Theme and Katie's Theme In both cases, the sax isn't the star of the song, but amplifies and brings and emotional aspects to each piece.

"The Pink Panther", "Peter Gunn" and Bill Conti! The sax was made for them!

No love for Kenny G's contributions on the otherwise lovely DYING YOUNG score by James Newton Howard?

How does Kenny G's playing of the saxophone differ from others? Yes, he's in that Yanni league of 'popular with muzak norms' category, but is there some 'uncool' fear factor at play here.

There is a certain "sweetness" to his playing that I don't hear from Michael Brecker, Andy Snitzer, Linda Spa, Richard Wester, Hubert Waldner, Steve Tavaglione, John West, Bendik Hofseth and Jan Garbarek, to name a few.

So Kenny G plays the sax too 'sweetly' (and has no love, or surname, for that matter). For the record, I enjoy the Ying Young score CD and find that Kenny G's sax playing on it doesn't detract from it...AT ALL. And I'M STILL COOL.
