Hah. I'm in that company...but the music on the other hand did have some highlights. After all, the first couple seasons of Next Generation are pretty darn painful as well, but they contain some of the best music of the series by far.

Point taken!

I still hope we will get the Voyager pilot score expanded & remastered! smile

The Next Generation Collection that came a few years ago was titled as "VOLUME ONE" which implies there should always have been a VOLUME TWO. I think it's overdue. Glad to have it now. But hopefully a Voyager set will hit this year too!

Sad news, everyone: It seems that GNPCrescendo's expanded/remastered Star Trek reissues are now finished and there will be no "continuing series". In Lukas's 50th Anniversary Collection requests thread, user catboy19 posted the following reply they had received from Melanie at GNP in response to their email inquiry about more reissues:

"We have the licenses for the music so nobody else can "take over" independent of us. Some of the reissues did great, the last ones not so much for the effort and expense that went into them. They are no doubt all over file sharing services already while we are still paying for them." (middle of page at following link)

So the pilots for DS9 and Voyager, and the scores on TNG Volumes 3 and 4, are also apparently off limits to LaLaLand to expand and remaster. The one hope I have is for some of the unreleased material to make it out on LLL compilations, because as we know from the Ron Jones Project, there was some kind of "compilation clause" or something which allowed Lukas to include up to 5 unreleased minutes of Best of Both Worlds. I would venture a guess that the same thing would apply if LLL wanted to release up to five unreleased minutes from other GNP scores (maybe even including the films they control, or Lukas or MV would have shot down the requests for First Contact alternates in the 50th Anniversary thread).

We do also know from past example that their two "Best of Star Trek" compilations did not grant perpetuity rights to the scores (because of Heart of Glory having no issues to appear complete on the Ron Jones set). So maybe we could see a complete (or at least more from) The Visitor, Heroes and Demons, Way of the Warrior, Bride of Chaotica, or All Good Things... (in particularly I wouldn't mind a complete release for All Good Things..., the final episode of the series and perhaps the best, with certainly a better score than usual for the seventh season).

Still, it is very sad to hear that GNP will no longer be continuing their Star Trek reissues. I was looking forward to remastered and complete versions of the DS9 and Voyager pilots myself. And a remastered and complete Tin Man. (I'm surprised GNP apparently retains perpetuity rights on all the scores represented on their TNG Vol. 4 release, because that was oftentimes only a track or two from each score.)

Interesting to read that officially, though I had heard similar comments from various people offline (i.e. around town and hush-hush). It is indeed a shame, I would've enjoyed hearing a remastered Vol. 3 just for a sound quality increase on those McCarthy scores. I'm a big fan of his scores for both "Yesterday's Enterprise" and "Hollow Pursuits". And with the Chattaway album, it also would have been nice to have the sound quality increase plus additional cues from those scores represented there, too. That being said, we really need to focus on the positive, which is the massive amount of music released from TNG over the years from FSM and LLL and the great 4-disc DS9 set from LLL, which more than makes up for not getting a remastered edition of the pilot score. I'm stoked about getting a second 3-disc TNG set from LLL, which for me pretty much closes the book on remaining music I wanted on disc from it, my favorite Trek series.

I have no objections to GNP chickening out of further Star Trek releases, but it would be "unfortunate" if they prevented other labels from inheriting their rights - I'm sure they could make a quick buck out of it. $$$ speaks.

As someone who has little - if any - interest in Star Trek releases, this strikes me as rather greedy.

'We don't want to play with this ball any more, but we don't want anyone else to play with it, either.' Seriously?

Although I am dissapointed that we won't be getting more from GNP, I am eternally greatful that they gave us a complete Encounter at Farpoint and Best of Both Worlds. Plus adding Arsenal of Freedom. Oh, and First Contact and Insurrection. That's all I could ask from them, in my opinion. It's not out of the question that the other companies could lisence the "unreleased tracks" from Yesterday's Enterprise, etc for the upcoming 50th Ann. Collection.

A claim from an anonymous poster that they received an email is not exactly hard evidence. This should be confirmed in some official way for this to go from assertion to fact.

But of course, this is the internet, and when is THAT the standard for factual information?

Yes, I have to admit I got that vibe as well.

For me it's the timing that's particularly disappointing. The 50th anniversary year of Star Trek would have been the perfect time for GNP to put out more of this stuff they control!

Well, I can confirm that Melanie *is* the name of GNP's rep (I know as I placed wholesale orders for Joel's Classical Shop through her)...why would this poster lie about his contact with her, in which he quoted exactly what she said? What would he have to gain from lying about it?

Yes, I know the name Melanie too, from orders I placed, thus making it easy for anyone who has done so to attribute words to that person. For me the question is why a staffer would explain company decisions in a reply to some individual's email. It's possible but not likely. Thus the need for confirmation.

I posted an inquiry on their official Facebook page. Hopefully they're reply so you can have your official confirmation. But it doesn't seem like they're interested in posting here lately.

P.S. Update from Lukas Kendall (who produced the expanded albums for GNP) in the 50th Anniversary collection requests thread:

"I worked for and with Melanie Clarkson Norman (Neil Norman's wife) on the recent GNP/Crescendo Star Trek collector's edition CDs, as well as the TOS box set from La-La Land Records. She and Neil were most supportive and helpful, and happy to release the expanded editions of Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, Best of Both Worlds and Encounter at Farpoint. I can confirm that the last time I spoke with her, the TV albums had not done as well as the feature albums, and they were in no hurry to do any further expanded editions; they have a lot going on at GNP, just not necessarily with soundtracks. However, just this past year GNP helped with the Mission: Impossible La-La Land box (working out a deal to let La La Land use some cues from their existing Mission album), so I'm sure if there was overwhelming interest in anything they control, we could work out the particulars, as we have in the past. Without putting words in anybody's mouth, that's the most I can say on this topic. The poster who relayed Melanie's message was accurate and only trying to be helpful, so let's say thanks to him for thinking of us, and move on.

Lukas"

Well perhaps the great missing cues from the Voyager Pilot can be licensed by LLL!

It's absolutely silly. All the labels and their respective titles are bootlegged like crazy, especially FSM, LLLR and Intrada, yet (aside from FSM, which ceased not because of bootlegging) the labels are not only going strong, last year MV said -- as I recall -- it's been their strongest year in sales ever. I'm sure Roger would say something similar about his label.

These releases were just never promoted well, to be fair. If you didn't read here or at Trekcore, people who bought the casettes and early CD's, probably have no idea these were even done. Among other little factors.

But you know what, if they want to do that, that's great, but to yank your ball away as the only kid on the neighborhood with a ball, and then say others can't play with it and that you won't play with it either, is frankly vengeful. It certainly doesn't counrage me to boldy seek out their expansions.

Whoa, Justin, I think you're going rather hard on GNP. For many many years they "held things hostage" I suppose, but in the past five years they've released complete editions of First Contact, Insurrection, Generations, Encounter at Farpoint, Arsenal of Freedom, and Best of Both Worlds! They could have just sit on those if they wanted. They also cooperated with LLL to allow GNP-controlled music onto their wonderful Star Trek and Mission: Impossible box sets! I understand and share your frustration that there won't be any more film music issues from them, but let's give them a little gratitude, okay?

You'll find you can attract more flies with honey than with vinegar. Lukas's statement gives me plenty of hope that at least some of the unreleased cues from Caretaker and Emissary (and possibly some from TNG Vols. 3 & 4 -- Tin Man!!!) may get released on LLL's upcoming 50th Anniversary set. Yes, it'd be nicer to have albums of the complete scores remastered but it'll still be great to get unreleased music!

Chattaway's Tin Man should definitely find a place - remastered - on one of LLL's sets. It was his first score for the series and stands out to this day for its beauty and creativity. Everything from GNP's Chattaway disc should be improved and transported over to TNG vol 3 or to the 50th set IMHO.

I was hoping for a complete TV score to "Yesterday's Enterprise." My hearing isn't that great lol, but I thought some selections sounded different on TV?
