Yesterday, I was listening to Afro-Cuban jazz and drinking rum cocktails.

But then it was dinnertime. We had Mediterranean, which meant that I had to switch to drinking wine. And this meant that I had to take off the Afro-Cuban jazz and listen to something Italian.

Luckily, my CD of "The Thing" arrived, so Ms. Birri and I enjoyed "The Thing" with dinner.

Anyone know where an albino koala such as I can get John Carpenter's synth music from this film?

Ordered from Intrada - mine arrived yesterday.

I’ve been playing it quite often since then. GREAT STUFF!
I can’t believe I never bought any previous version of this before. All I’ve ever owned is the one track on the John Carpenter Anthology disc.

The Varese disc was a price-barrier for whoever that missed it, the BSX rendition is good but quite off with its material, I prefer the Varese its the most accurate material of the film, but now this is here i'm all for it. well-done Quartet for reproducing the finer quality thanks..

I actually only now that I have the Quartet bought the BSX recording (as digital Download via Qobuz) for the additional Carpenter cues (which I consider absolutely non-essential as music or within the context of the score... I just wanted to have them anyway), and because I find it interesting to have some of the electronic music re-recorded. (I had heard the BSX recording before, though I did not have it myself).

The Quartet release is very fine indeed, the sound has indeed more presence than the Varèse, though it contains the same mix, so the difference -- while it is there - is not as huge as it was, say, between the Rhino and the LaLaLand Superman. Not a MUST upgrade, unless you are a nutcase like me who just loves this score (and movie).

My copy came in yesterday as well and been listening to it on repeat since. This masterpiece was nominated for a Razzie for Worst Score lol. Sound is terrific. Weird it's taken so long to get a new CD release but better late than never. Thanks Quartet.

All original recordings are apparently lost. The Carpenter synth cues have been re-recorded twice, once by Carpenter and collaborators for a vinyl release of the score, and once by Carpenter's long time collaborator Alan Howarth for BSX. That's it.

Thanks. So BSX is the way to go if I want digital versions, that I can mix in with the Morricone tracks, right?

Yes, I would say so. The Carpenter cues are very well recreated. After all, who better to do it than Alan Howarth?

My tracking says that my copy left Spain on June 4th as well!!!!

I wonder where they've got to?

Same with mine - I understand things are a little messed up at present but this seems excessive.

Tracking now shows movement to say it has arrived in the UK at least. Hopefully not too long now...

My copy has also arrived at Heathrow, so hopefully it'll soon be on it's way to me smile

I recently listened to first the Quartet release of THE THING and then to the complete BSX re-recording, and I have to say in case of THE THING it makes perfect sense to have the original organic orchestral score by Morricone copied and imitated by electronic mimicry. :-)

Any further comments on the sound upgrade (if any)?

Thanks,

Ian
