Any further comments on the sound upgrade (if any)?

Thanks,

Ian

It sounds really great, but to be honest, it's the packaging (cover art etc) that really wows me. The whole thing (sic) looks and feels so good. Finally it's been done right.

There is a sound upgrade (obviously it's been remastered), but it is not "essential", it is not a new mix. I have to say this score holds a very special meaning to me, I got the original LP, then the Varèse Sarabande CD, and now had to get the Quartet, which unsurprisingly has the best booklet. But unless you are nuts about his score (as I obviously am), I would not say this is an "essential" sonic upgrade. It is a re-release of the same mix with a newer mastering that has a bit more presence.

I just did a comparison with "Humanity Part 2" on the Varese disc. The Varese sounded a little pinched, I thought. With the Quartet there's a spaciousness around the reverb effect on the "heartbeat" synth, for example, and generally I'm hearing more detail. Also, the big solo organ always sounded too hot and harsh to me, but not now.

Ah, that was a good listen. Now time to take a break and do some fun things.

*Watches a 'Making Of' Documentary of the film 'The Andromeda Strain'

*Ennio Morricone's score for 'The Thing' plays over the documentary*

I am never going to escape this score.

I am listening to it right now and, yes, the sound is much better.

This album's old MCA/Varèse mastering is on YouTube. As I was listening to my favorite track "Despair", I was seized with the urge to order the new edition from Quartet.

Chris Malone will not have dampened those high strings with too much noise reduction, no doubt.

Really looking forward to this. This was my first Morricone album back in the day. Can't wait!

This title is still in Screen Archives' top ten. But no recent word here on it.

Who's buyin' it? How does "Despair" improve in this mastering? What's the skinny?

I’ve listened to this score non stop since I got the Quartet CD.
It’s a stunning work and under rated. The remastering is nothing short of fantastic. It might not be super obvious but I find the new CD to be much better sounding than the original release.

Agreed. A very dynamic and spine-tingling listen.

Fantastic avatar btw.

Yes! Purchased the DaiMajin scores two years ago, and they follow me everywhere on my iPhone. Fantastic works by one ofmy very favorite composers, Mr. Ifukube.

Cinematically they hold up very well too. The first film in particular is splendid. Where statue walks out of the mountain is one of my favourite scenes of any film, announced by Ifukube’s thunderous theme. Runner up: War Of the Gargantuas.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

I'd never heard of Daimajin until this morning when it randomly popped up on YouTube, so i watched it - it's great - the music was good too. Then i see this thread and your avatar. Random.

As for The Thing: Despair is my favourite track ever.

Despair has a Bartok vibe to it but Morricone added his own compositional flavour to it. It’s also my favourite track but I’ve really begun to enjoy the entire score. It’s an essay in bleakness (if that’s a word).

I think the aspect of this track in general that is so fascinating is how Morricone uses semi tone trills in the violins which already establishes unease because of the semi tone- it’s functioning like a harmonic suspension. Then the he splits them a tone apart but still playing that half tone trill. This adds more density and chromaticism to the harmony creating an overall sense of dread.
Low brass then voice chords around this string also moving around chromatically. The whole cue has the air of tonal instability but also this long build in dynamics toward that brass statement at the cud’s climax. No other composer has approached a score in this manner since and it’s a darn shame because this is genius writing!

Good news from all. I'll have the disc spinner ready for Morricone next week.

sorry I changed my avatar in memory of Morricone. I will switch it back eventually.

RIP maestro!

Got my copy. I can't think of a finer memorial Morricone release than this one, which has some really transcendent moments.

And yes, like last year's Ghost Story release, which was also recorded at Universal, the sound on this album really gets its lungs after a tasteful and not-overdone remaster. Kudos to Chris Malone and the people at Quartet!
