I have actually not heard Field of Dreams or the 48 Hours scores but I loved what I heard from the samples ... Field of Dreams just sounds lovely.

Man, you're in for a treat. The architecture of the score is sublime and crescendos with "The Place Where Dreams Come True," easily one of the ten best cues Horner ever wrote.

Absolutely this. Easily one of the best things Horner did and he was immensely proud of it when asked.

I sampled a couple of cues on the new release, and it sounds great.

A wonderful release.

Oh my gosh. Not to pile on but if this is a new score for you its going to be a real treat. Beware that Horner doesn’t bring in a full orchestra until the last reel of the movie. Instead, the first 2/3 of the film are “James Horner plays synths live to screen” which, if you’ve listened to any of those scores, can be hit or miss. But Field of Dreams is a massive hit. The synth voices Horner uses are mystical and haunting (and do not sound dated in 2022), there’s layers of themes that are emotional and memorable, and the payoff with the orchestra in the last 1/3 of the movie are wildly worth it. This is, for my money, James Horner’s best score and a score it took serious talent and creativity to pull off. You’ll love it. It’s James Horner at his most intimate and absolute best. And if you haven’t seen the movie, run (don’t walk) to find a copy and watch. I’m steely hearted and there’s never a time I’ve watched the film where I haven’t bawled like a toddler at the end. Horner’s score hits the end so perfectly given that he ebbs and flows the orchestra just perfectly for what’s going on on screen.

FoD could be said, arguably, to be the best spotted film in the history of film music.

I hate to be the one to say it... but I think there's a problem with the audio. I've only listened to a small sample as I rip Disc 1, but so far there's a rhythmic "whispy" sound in the higher register. I've sampled tracks 1 and 4, and hear it on Track 1 from 1:38 to 3:40 and on Track 4, sporadically, from 0:28 to 2:15. I would guess it's on most or all tracks. I'll report back on how frequent.

Anyone else have their copy yet and can confirm?

EDIT: I compared Track 1 on both discs, since they're the same track, and they both have it. Then I compared to Track 1 on the 1989 CD (same track again) and it has it too, so it's in the recording. Weird. I guess it's much more obvious in a modern hi-rez remaster.

Sorry for the false alarm.

Oh that’s exciting! I like to use film scores for my fiction and non-fiction writing. I imagine Field of Dreams will really fire up my emotions then. Cool stuff. It sounds like one of those scores where you can start at track one and never have to hit the skip button.

Listening now. I'm up to The Library. This and Deciding to Build the Field have always been faves. They sound so good.

So far the standout tracks have been either The Vision or Dinner's Ready.

I received my copy yesterday (Thursday) and have already listened to Disc 1 twice. It more than met my expectations.

Ever since I saw the movie when it premiered in 1989, and bought the soundtrack as soon as it was available, I've waited anxiously to hear the music that accompanies James Earl Jones's iconic baseball speech near the end of the movie that, for reasons I never understood, was not included on the original release. Finally, I have it ("The Decision"). That track alone was worth the price of the set, but there are other delightful bonuses, including two Big Band pieces, "Dinner's Ready" and "Night Game."

I can't speak for anyone else, but this is one of the best expanded editions of scores I've heard in years, and one of my two remaining Holy Grails of soundtracks (an expanded "The Reivers" is the other).

What a great beginning to 2022. There's hope yet!

Great post! I'm curious...I like The Reivers a great deal, but off the top of my head I don't know what cues are still unreleased. Do you happen to have an idea of what's still missing?

Mine arrived and I enjoyed auditioning it (Disc 1 only). At the end of the day though, everything I like best about it is on my old album. For me, the orchestral "The Place Where Dreams Come True" is probably Horner's finest-ever single track. But now I have three identical presentations of that exact same piece (two with the new release and my old one of the same). Folks who have more patience for synth than I have should be well pleased with the expanded presentation. The presentation is top notch with a substantial and high class booklet.

Shouldn't that be....ya know....everything you buy? Or at least most of them?
If I would "have to hit the skip button" I wouldn't own it in the first place.
I will continue to boggle at this message board....

You don't have any scores that have three or four of the best tracks you've ever heard but the rest is just OK at best?

Is there a big difference sound wise?

Is there a big difference sound wise?

Certainly. Everything is more crisp, more clear and I can hear details I haven't heard before.

So I stated to "A/B" this with the original. It sounds good, but I'm not sure it sounds THAT much better. (One man's opinion, of course. People with better ears than I may disagree.)

It's a great set. The additional material is great. If you're the sort who wants an essential presentation of a musical idea and isn't interested in any possibly extraneous variations on that idea then maybe the OST is enough.

The Decision is definitely nice to have. (Anyone else thinks that the opening of Star Trek: Generations sounds a little like this?)

Or better equipment. I'm listening under professional headphones using a professional sound card at 192 KHz.

Not enough that I would be able to confidently identify which one was playing if you played me only one of them.
But I would recognize the new one by the unusually large amounts of silence between many tracks which combine with lots of particularly long fades-to-silence to add a considerable amount of nothingness to the listening time.

Thanks for your kind words.

The biggest omission to "The Reivers" is the music that accompanies the climactic race in which Lucius and Lightning win the second heat. It has a dreamlike quality that perfectly matches the slow motion photography and Burgess Meredith's memorable narration.

I'd also love to hear the score the way it's presented in the movie, not lumped together as a suite, which is a John Williams trademark. For example, the first track on both the CD and LP releases consists of three separate pieces, each of which could stand on its own. The second track is a medley of two different scenes, and Track 6 combines three different themes. Ideally, they'd all be presented separately.

The 1995 Sony release included one extra track ("Reflections") and some additional music to two other tracks, but I recall there are other, shorter parts of the score left out entirely. As this is my absolute favorite soundtrack of all time, I want every note!

Incidentally, I saw this movie in a theater when it was released in 1969. I instantly fell in love with the score and the composer, who was unknown to me at the time (this was before "Jaws" and "Star Wars").
