I don't know what I was on about back in 2007, per my previous posts in this thread. Leo is a great actor; perhaps I've changed my opinion because he's showcased so many different, impressive roles in the last decade. Especially the physical acting in films like THE WOLF OF WALL STREET and THE REVENANT.

His versatility shines through in his latest, ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD, not because it is dramatically equal to either of the two you mention, but because it is such a departure in character, and he carries it off with such consistency and yes, even believability. I became convinced of Leo's greatness the first time I saw WHAT'S EATING GILBERT GRAPE, and he was such a youngster at the time! I do think he will be remembered as among the very most skilled actors of our era.

Someone once opined that a person who has had a charmed life like Leo can never be a truly great actor.
I think there is alot to be said for that.
You have to have some personal trauma to draw on if you want to be great.
Leo never struggled a day in his entire life.

Not his fault. He is as good as a golden boy can be!

I think if you read a thoroughly researched biography of Marlon Brando you would be hard-pressed to find examples of any significant "personal trauma" in his early life, and yet he came through the Method school of acting which draws upon the actor's emotional experiences as the basis of his performance. With all due respect, I don't think "someone's" half-baked theory of what one must have experienced to be a truly great actor holds much water. But bottom line, Leo is clearly and consistently among the top of his profession, so we need not parse the "talent performers" from the "trauma performers." If your description of Leo's personal history is valid, then he knocks quite a large hole in your hypothesis.

I'm sure Brando had the life struggles that.most of us go through.
' Trauma' doesn't necessarily mean some.horrible tragedy.

Leo is very good but I don't think he could ever channel the deep emotional reserves that someone like Al Pacino could.

But, that's just my take - I studied Method acting for awhile.

Favorite Leo performances? Mine are:

Catch Me If You Can
Gangs of New York
[I didn't pay much attention to him until 2002.]
The Departed
Shutter Island
Inception
[Shutter and Inception are his two great ones for me, and in both he's haunted by a dead wife.]
The Great Gatsby
Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood

[the absence of Titanic is intentional - can't stand that movie. I still would like to see his early What's Eating Gilbert Grape, though.]

GANGS OF NY?!

Even his admirers are down on the film

The film is a mixed bag, but it and Catch Me If You Can were the first two films that made me sit up and take notice of Leo for the first time.

After hearing the story about Don's Plum, it is interesting everyone involved in the movie saw how inferior Tobey Maguire's talents compared to Leonardo Dicaprio's could impact his career.

You overlook his best film, TITANIC, in favor of a mediocrity like GONY

TITANIC sucked big-time, oh my gosh. What an obnoxious piece of whale blubber. I didn't even like the score, and I'm probably the biggest James Horner fan on this site!

Still part of the p*ssy posse?
Don's Plum still shamefully unavailable on DVD/Blu-Ray?

I haven't seen most of the films mentioned above (including Titanic), but I've loved his performance in everything I have seen him in. I'll add The Basketball Diaries to the must-see list for DiCaprio fans who haven't.

" Shamefully" or " thankfully"?

Oh? Does Fearless also feature people from 1912 speaking in 1990s rhythms and jargon?
