Yes, I saw that. Should I go into my usual inconsolable "Steve Jobs/Kim Jong-il-has-died" mourning mode, or just shake my head at the fact that Thor drinks white wine, and not red?

I burned out on red a few years back. It tastes weird to me now. I like white wine on occasion.

I'm sorry to hear that. I like white wine occasionally, but don't consume the stuff frequently enough to destroy a keyboard.

I have a bottle of Colombian rum, "Ron Medellin", hanging around that I still drink. After all, I'm further south than you, so the weather stays hotter longer.

Mrs. Phelps and I will be hitting the Irish pub tonight, so it'll be my usual pint of Guinness. I'm the only one here who likes it. wink

Last night I was by myself, and I made some Italian-seasoned vegetables for dinner, and thought I should have some wine with it. I was out of white, but had a fairly nice bottle of Sterling cab, which I think is like a $15 or $20 bottle. I poured a tiny bit in a glass to go with dinner, and I could barely finish it. And not because it turned or anything. I transitioned to old fashioneds after dinner.

It makes me sad because there is some music that just begs to go with red wine, like giallo soundtracks, for example.

If I ever found a bourbon I liked, maybe I would get enthusiastic about the Old Fashioned, which was my paternal grandfather's "go to" cocktail for as long as I can remember.

Get the Jim Beam Pre-Prohibition rye, a great value. And be sure to use Bada Bing cherries and not the dime-store maraschino cherries.

It's bratwurst for dinner tonight which involves boiling the brats in beer, so I'm drinking the last of a 4-pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Pabst is about as "good" as Stella Artois, Harp, Carlsburg, and just about any other run-of-the-mill European beer, which isn't saying much...

Enjoyed a few of these on Saturday:

Not my favorite Sierra Nevada beer, but definitely drinkable.

I also had some of this, which is a local favorite:

I tend to prefer "hoppy", "wheaty"-style beers. Any other beer recommendations?

Not to keen on wheat beers myself (as with Guiness or other dark ales, one unit will suffice for one evening). So I'll leave the recommendations to someone else.

Do you mean you want a beer that is both hoppy and wheaty, or that you like beers that have one of those traits? For the hoppy and wheaty style, you may want to experiment with some unfiltered or hazy IPAs from some of your local microbreweries. https://www.beeradvocate.com/articles/10741/hazed-and-confused-seeking-clarity-in-ipas/

Currently in Pula, Croatia — drinking strong Belgian beers (yes, they have that here). For the film music festival here (I was in the jury).

For dinner tonight I'm attempting a different--and beanless--chili recipe, part of which involves dumping a 16oz can of Miller High Life beer. As tradition requires, I will drink one of the beers when having the chili.

You're all invited to come over, but leave your emotional baggage BS outside. wink big grin

Happy Thanksgiving, kids!

Last month I tried that "Two-Hearted River" beer and liked it. Strong bitterness with a citrus flourish. It reminds me of the Dogfish Romantic Chemistry brew I enjoyed wo much.

I have another "Two-Hearted River" beer waiting in the fringe, which I'll have tonight. I'm not sure the craft beer movement is one I'll embrace to a fanatical extent, but I will definitely try any that pique my curioisty.

Don't know nuttin' 'bout no Thanksgiving, but I'm going out with a few friends today to have a late celebration of my 41st birthday on Monday. Nothing to celebrate at this point in life, of course, but I never refuse an excuse to drink horrendous amounts of beers.

Is it a late celebration of your 41st birthday because you just turned 51?

How to avoid a hangover:

Drink one of those large coconut waters before you go to bed. You will feel fine the next morning.

Coco-what?

Coco-what?

Coconuts, Thor. I realize they don't grow in Norway, but every piece of property in the United States comes with its own coconut tree, by decree of law. You have to climb the tree while drunk and then spend a half hour hitting the coconut with a hammer, but drinking the coconut water is well worth the trouble if you want to feel good the next day.

I'll be on the lookout for 'coconut water' the next time I'm in the grocery store. Thanks for the tip!
